Apollon Kalamaria lose again at home and sit 14th on eight points

A home defeat that tells you where this season is going

Apollon Kalamaria lost 0–2 at home to Niki Volou on Saturday 24 October, round eight of Superleague 2 (1). Zero goals at home against a mid-table opponent. That is the whole week in one line, and it is not a bad afternoon, it is a pattern.

The table is the part that stings. Pyrgos beat Zakynthos 3–2 to close round eight, and that result pulled Apollon level on eight points, into 14th (5). Eight points after eight rounds. In a division where the bottom half is a crowded, nervous place, being caught by a team that had not yet won away is exactly the wrong kind of company.

The attack has stopped scoring, and nobody is hiding it

Three league matches, and the scoreline is the same problem each time. Apollon have not won in the league in that stretch, and the two most recent home fixtures produced one goal against and two against Niki Volou, with nothing going the other way (1).

You can talk about structure and blocks and the difficulty of Superleague 2 all you like. A side that cannot score at home cannot build a season. Niki Volou did not need to be brilliant. They needed one clean sheet, and they got it comfortably.

This is the hard part for a support that has heard every explanation before. The squad needs a scorer, or it needs a different way of getting the ball into the box. What it does not need is another week of the same shape producing the same zero.

Familiar faces back on the bench

The club announced the return of Dimitris Nolis and Foris Kakoglou to the coaching staff this week (3). Two people the club knows, brought back into a group that is short on answers.

I do not read this as a panic move. I read it as a club admitting the current setup is not getting enough out of the players it has. Familiarity helps when a dressing room is losing confidence, and a group on eight points and 14th is definitely losing confidence.

But a coaching staff does not score goals. Nolis and Kakoglou can change the training week, the set-piece delivery, the way the front line presses. Somebody on the pitch still has to put the ball in the net in front of your own crowd.

What to watch

The next league fixture is the one that matters, and the question is simple: does the new-look staff change the front line or just the tone of the week? Apollon spent eight rounds scoring too little at home and are now level with a side that had not won on the road. Another blank and 14th becomes a habit rather than a position. A win and the gap to the middle opens up again. Watch the team sheet, and watch who takes the first real chance.
