Brighton 3–0 Arsenal, and the table flipped in one afternoon
Five wins, one goal conceded, top of the league. Then the Amex. Brighton 3–0 Arsenal, and the champions were not just beaten, they were taken apart (1). Alan Shearer said it should have been six or seven (5). Arteta did not argue with the scoreline, he argued with the standards. "A very disappointing result and performance," he said. "Full credit to Brighton" (1).
The passing was the problem, not the luck
Arteta was specific: "When we had the ball, especially in our own half, we were extremely poor technically, not respecting the game and the game principles you have to apply against a team that want to press you man to man" (2). That is not bad luck, that is a plan failing. Brighton pressed, Arsenal hid. Declan Rice got the ball and found nobody offering, and Paul Merson described him as close to going completely berserk because "no one wants the ball" (7). Rice's frustration was the honest picture of the afternoon. He also escaped a red card in stoppage time, with the Premier League explaining the call and Shearer agreeing the yellow was correct (6).
This is a squad issue, not one bad day
Arsenal carry the biggest wage bill in the Premier League at £175.2m a year (17). That buys depth, and the depth is being tested: 19 first-team players now leave for an extended international break (20), and Max Dowman made only a late cameo at Brighton, with Arteta refusing to rule out a loan for the 16-year-old (10) (31). Add the noise around Viktor Gyökeres and his limited minutes, with Milan, Juventus and Saudi clubs linked (12), and the £1.5m Georgian winger Andria Bartishvili arriving in 2027 (8), and the picture is a club already planning past this XI.
What to watch next
Manchester City beat Sunderland 5–3 and took top spot outright (16). Arsenal sit second on 12 points from five, goal difference +4, form W W W W L. The response matters more than the result: Konsa said the squad set high standards and "it's important not to lower them, as we have done today" (4). Bruno Guimarães went further and apologised to the travelling fans, saying it "wasn't good enough" (3). The fixtures after the break are where that apology gets tested. Watch who Arteta trusts in midfield when the press comes again.
