Martinelli and Jesus both out as Arsenal remakes its attack mid-window

Martinelli out, and the attack just changed shape

Two forwards gone in one window. Gabriel Martinelli is Al-Hilal bound with a medical booked and a fee that breaks Arsenal's record (1) (3) (7). Gabriel Jesus is Barcelona bound at €10m (2) (5). One is a Saudi payday. The other is a club cutting its losses. Together they say one thing: this squad is being remade on the fly, mid-season, two days before Aston Villa away.

The Martinelli fee stings less than the player. Romano has it over €65m in the package (5). Record money for a winger who scored with both feet, ran the touchline, and turned 23 with his whole prime ahead of him. Fans are not reading the fee as victory. They are reading it as an ending (reddit). You do not sell that profile for any number if you are building forward without a replacement already in the building.

The replacement is not on the squad list yet

Arsenal beat Coventry 3–0 on August 21. Six days later the front line is being gutted. Jesus had his farewell talk, Martinelli his medical. What is coming in? Habeeb Ogunneye, a 20-year-old right-back from Manchester United, announced on August 30 (10) (17). Andrii Bartishvili, a 17-year-old Georgian midfielder for €4.5m (12). Respectable additions. Neither replaces a 23-year-old who starts every fit week.

The rumour mill points at Endrick, who Madrid will not sell (24), Marcus Rashford (27), and a €35m Stuttgart defender named Jeltsch (25). Julian Alvarez is already ruled out (34). None of that is a winger signed and ready. The club has sold the present and bought the future in the same week. That is a strategy. It is also a gamble with three league games in nine days coming.

Christos Tzolis is about to stop being a talking point

Martinelli's departure does not just free a wage bill. It hands minutes to whoever Arteta trusts next. Tzolis and Eberechi Eze are the names in the mix (13). One of them walks into a starting role at Villa Park on Monday and has to produce immediately, because the margin is €70m and no one remembers the fee if the replacement cannot score. The Coventry 3–0 was the last time this forward line looked settled. It will not look settled for a while.

What to watch

Aston Villa away on Monday, August 31, then Chelsea at home on September 6, then Napoli in the Champions League on September 9. Three games, one week and a half, and Arteta picks his front three without Martinelli for the first time in years. If the answer is a loan and a prayer, the table will say so. The club has bet its whole attacking identity that it can sell two forwards and stay 6th. Monday is the first test of that bet.
