The club that set a ceiling
Morgan Rogers will wear blue next season. Chelsea paid Aston Villa £117m. No instalments, no performance add-ons, no negotiation, just the price, met in full (1) (6) (9). Arsenal had agreed personal terms with the player but refused to go beyond a £90m–100m ceiling (Reddit). Xabi Alonso made the difference, picking up the phone and selling the Chelsea project (1) (17).
There are two ways to read this. The first is that Arsenal lost a priority attacking target to a London rival because they would not stretch an extra £17m. That is a bruise. The second is that the club has a valuation model and it held, even when the market went mad. Either way, Rogers is gone. The frustration among supporters is real, and it is justified. But it is also worth noting what this is not, it is not a failure of ambition. It is a choice about how to spend.
Saka's three goals and Tuchel's blind spot
England beat France 6–4 in the World Cup third-place playoff on Saturday, and Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick (3) (8) (11). This is the same player Thomas Tuchel left on the bench for the semi-final against Argentina (5). Tuchel later admitted he was "not even aware" Saka had scored three goals during the match (28).

Saka himself cut through the noise: "I don't think anything can lessen the pain of the other night" (8). When asked about his fitness afterward, he was direct: "Yeah, I'm fit. Of course, I would love to have played more" (Reddit). He is 24 years old, Arsenal's most important attacker, and his national team manager did not notice he had put three past France. Arsenal fans should be furious. They should also be reassured, Saka is fit, sharp, and coming home.
Declan Rice also played. Joe Hart had urged Tuchel to rest both of them: "The last thing they need is to go and slug it out in Miami" (10) (12). Tuchel ignored that advice. Two of Arsenal's most important players now return from a month-long tournament with more minutes in their legs than was necessary.
Saliba's back and the scramble for a defender
William Saliba has a back injury. It could keep him out for the start of the season (14) (35). That single sentence changes Arsenal's summer.
The club are preparing a bid for Ezri Konsa (2) (4). They have explored Maxence Lacroix, who spoke warmly about the club: "We spoke a lot about Arsenal, that it was one of his favourite teams" (7) (18). Fabrizio Romano reports calls have been made for Sporting's Yan Diomande, though PSG are ahead (8) (16). This is not opportunistic squad building, it is reactive. Saliba is irreplaceable, and the market knows Arsenal are desperate.
The deals that are happening
Christos Tzolis will join from Club Brugge for €40m (3) (12) (19). He is a left winger, a Trossard replacement in profile and timing. His soon-to-be-former manager Ivan Leko gave him the kind of tribute that matters: "First coming on the training base, last staying there. Every training was like a game for him" (12). Arsenal need workers, not just talents. Tzolis appears to be both.
The Bruno Guimarães saga may be winding down. Arsenal are stepping back (6) (14), and Guimarães changed his Instagram profile picture on Saturday to a family photo at St James' Park (15). Bradley Barcola is a name in the air, but Liverpool are in club-to-club talks and Arsenal have not yet bid (11) (29). Young goalkeeper Alexei Rojas rejected a contract and has joined Portuguese side Penafiel (9).
The week ahead
A defender must arrive. Konsa is the most concrete name. Diomande and Lacroix are in the conversation. Saliba's timeline dictates the urgency. Pre-season preparations are about to begin, and Mikel Arteta needs to know who his back line is. The Rogers miss will sting for a while, but the Saliba-shaped hole in the squad is the problem that actually matters right now.
