Crocked, not beaten
Arsenal sit second with 12 points from five games, and the international break could have cost them more than the table shows. Bukayo Saka scored twice in England's 7–0 win over Croatia (14) (24). Viktor Gyokeres made Nations League history with his sixth straight scoring appearance for Sweden in a 1–1 draw in Bosnia and Herzegovina (7). Both came home fit, and that is the only part of this week that maps onto a title race.
Because the same week took Christos Tzolis. He picked up a muscle injury on international duty and faces three to four weeks out (5) (6). Arsenal are now without a senior wide option for the Leeds game on Saturday and the Lille tie on October 13, and they have no way to replace that internally at the level Arteta demands.
The number that matters
Twelve points from five is the sort of start that wins leagues. A perfect August, three away wins in a row, then 3–0 at Brighton on September 19 (RECENT RESULTS). Nobody is panicking about a single bad afternoon. But Arsenal have now kept clean sheets in three straight matches and conceded just once since the Chelsea win, and that defensive floor is the actual argument for a second straight title. The attack is the question, not the back four.

Only five goals in five league games. Gyokeres has been scoring for Sweden, four in his last four internationals, and Saka has been scoring for England. Neither has been scoring for Arsenal at the rate this team needs. That gap is the story of the season so far.
What Arsenal are actually building
The reported interest in Jarell Quansah (9) fits a pattern that has run all year. Arsenal do not buy for the next game. They buy for the three seasons after it. Max Dowman was sent off on England Under-19 duty in a behind-closed-doors friendly (8), and there is already talk of a loan to Scottish football (15). Owen Emeka at 17, Justin Ejodamen, the long-running Kenan Yildiz chase (2) (12). This is a club that plans its roster like a portfolio.
That does not help on Saturday. Chelsea reportedly lead the race for Alex Scott, with Arsenal and Liverpool behind (3). Losing a target to a direct rival is a familiar sting.
The Tzolis injury makes the January plan urgent. Antonio Nusa is the name linked as cover (12), and it is not a coincidence that the club is already working the wing market.
What to watch
Leeds United at home on Saturday, then Lille in the Champions League on October 13, then Nottingham Forest away on October 18. Three games in eight days with a thin attacking corps. If Arsenal are still top two after that stretch, the title defence is real. If they drop points at home to Leeds, the summer's caution in the market becomes a live argument. Arteta has a fortnight to prove his squad is deep enough.
