A summer of chasing ghosts
The summer transfer window is not officially open, yet Arsenal are linked with 20 players by one count (25), and the names keep multiplying: Bradley Barcola, Igor Thiago, Sandro Tonali, Morgan Rogers, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Christos Tzolis, Alex Scott, Jeremy Monga, Mason Greenwood. The club finished second in the league, lost a Champions League final on penalties, and now seems to be chasing everything that moves.
The question is whether this scattergun is ambition or something less flattering.
Saliba and Raya are still carrying that final
David Raya put it plainly this week: "I was broken inside because we were so, so, so, so close" (13). That Champions League final loss to PSG, Arsenal's first in 20 years, did not evaporate over the summer break. It sat. It still sits.

Meanwhile, William Saliba admitted he is not 100 percent and has been managing a back injury for months, pushing through because a World Cup comes every four years (5) (8). It is a necessary gamble for France, but for Arsenal it is a red flag. The centre-back is the foundation of Arteta's defensive structure, and he is playing hurt in a tournament that runs deep into the summer.
Raya's honesty and Saliba's grit are admirable. They also tell you the squad is still physically and emotionally drained from May.
The Saka management plan is smart, and worrying
Bukayo Saka has been training separately from the England group, managing an Achilles issue (2). He missed Friday's session entirely ahead of the Ghana match (6) (10). Gareth Southgate's staff are handling him carefully, and that is the right call.
Arsenal fans know this script. Saka played through pain last spring and his form dipped. An Achilles problem does not heal in a week. If England go deep, Saka returns to London in late July with a summer of careful management behind him but no real rest.
The club need him healthy for August. Right now, that is not a given.
The transfer noise is deafening, but the signal is faint
Arteta has spoken directly to Tzolis. Talks with Bouaddi's representatives are underway, and Football Insider describes Arsenal as "maybe at the front of the queue" (22). An €80m bid for Barcola is reportedly being prepared (14) (15). Declan Rice is said to be working a "charm offensive" on Morgan Rogers through England duty (1). Fabio Vieira trains alone as Hamburg haggle over the fee (11).
That is a lot of activity and not much clarity. Arsenal want a winger, a midfielder, a striker, and competition at full-back. The list of targets suggests the club is still deciding who fits and at what price.
One deal looks real: Elijah Upson, the Tottenham academy defender, has rejected Spurs' contract offers and Arsenal are in pole position to sign him on a free (21). It is a smart, low-cost move with an under-the-radar feel. Those are the signings that tend to work out.
What to watch
The World Cup dominates the calendar, but Merino's return to full Spain training (19) is a quiet development worth tracking. Four months out with a foot injury is a long time. If he gets minutes in the knockout rounds, he arrives for pre-season with rhythm, not rust.
On the transfer front, the Bouaddi talks are the one to follow. At 18, he played against Brazil and was outstanding (22). Liverpool and PSG want him. If Arsenal close this early, it signals the summer has a plan, not just a list.<｜end▁of▁thinking｜>
