Guimarães pursuit hits a wall, then a public row
Arsenal are pushing for four major signings this summer with a combined value of £366m, and Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães is among them (4). But the fee is the problem. Reports of a £50m figure were labelled "utter nonsense" by former Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi. Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards fired back: "Which part Mehrdad? The £50m fee? I agree. I'm only reporting what has been claimed from their side" (7). The deal looks deadlocked.
Saliba, France march into the semis without conceding
William Saliba's France have yet to trail in a single match at this World Cup. They face Spain in the semi-final with a spotless defensive record, and Saliba has been central to it (8). Spain have not trailed either. Something has to give.
Arsenal Women: Kafaji and Nighswonger set to leave
Arsenal Women expect Rosa Kafaji and Jenna Nighswonger to depart as pre-season training begins next week (9). Several summer transfers have already been completed, including the arrival of Lisa Baum.
Fan reactions
The mood on the Trossard deal is largely appreciative. Fans on r/Gunners are wishing him well, acknowledging his contributions to the title win while accepting the move makes sense at 31 with a fee coming in. The Tzolis link has sparked curiosity. One thread is already buzzing with the Mokbel report that Club Brugge expect a bid. Full discussion here.
