Vinicius Junior talks are real and Arsenal are not bluffing

Vinicius Junior is real, and so are the stakes

Arsenal are working on a deal to sign Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid. This is not a rumour designed to sell shirts or fill a quiet news cycle, preliminary talks have opened, and the Brazilian's camp is in a contract stand-off with Madrid (1) (7) (17). The wage demands are, by all accounts, towering (19) (35). If you are the Premier League champions and Champions League runners-up, this is the kind of move that says you intend to stay there.

Gabriel Martinelli has already made the case publicly. Speaking this week, he called his international teammate "a special boy who deserves to win the Ballon d'Or" (31). That is not a neutral comment. It is a teammate laying the groundwork for a transfer that would reshape Arsenal's attack and, frankly, the wage structure that delivered the title.

A friendly, a teenager, and business as usual

Arsenal beat MK Dons 3–0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday (2) (13). Reiss Nelson, Christos Tzolis, and Ethan Nwaneri scored. Daniel Barlaser made his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt. Kepa Arrizabalaga, on trial, featured too (2).

The headline from the run-out was not the scoreline. It was Ceadach O'Neill and 15-year-old Max Dowman coming off the bench and looking like they belonged (2). Pre-season friendlies answer no big questions, but an academy pipeline producing players Arteta trusts enough to give minutes is the quiet foundation beneath every expensive headline.

Guimaraes, and a midfield that means business

Arsenal are expected to table a fresh bid for Bruno Guimaraes next week: more than £70m, with personal terms already agreed (6) (14). Eddie Howe spoke this week and could not guarantee his captain stays. "I don't know what's going to happen with Bruno's future," he said (4) (12). Newcastle would reportedly accept £80m plus (8).

A midfield trio of Guimaraes, Merino, and Rice, behind an attack that might include Vinicius, is the kind of depth that makes a Champions League push more than ambition. It is a plan. The bid lands within days. If Newcastle say yes, Arsenal's summer shifts from intent to execution.

What to watch

The Guimaraes bid is the next concrete event. If it lands at £80m and Newcastle accept, attention snaps back to Vinicius, because that deal demands sales (21). Several names have already been floated as departures to fund it. Meanwhile, Real Madrid are closing in on Yan Diomande, a winger Arsenal had tracked (33) (36). That door looks shut, but it clarifies the focus: the club are chasing one world-class forward, not spreading bets. This week tells us whether they can land him.
