Season ends with a whimper as Sarri waits in the wings

The season ended not with a bang but with an own goal from a Fiorentina defender. Atalanta drew 1–1 at the Franchi on the final matchday, a result that speaks volumes about the club's current state. Roberto Piccoli put the Viola ahead in the 39th minute before Pietro Comuzzo turned the ball into his own net late in the second half (26) (28). Charles De Ketelaere came off the bench but offered little to change the game's direction (22). Seventh place, 59 points, a single draw from the last five matches, this was not a season to celebrate. It was one to endure.

The defining storyline of the summer is already clear, and it wears red. Ederson is all but gone. Manchester United have agreed terms on a deal worth €48 million plus €5 million in bonuses, and the player himself has made his intentions unmistakably plain, he wants Old Trafford and nowhere else (2) (5) (17). Palladino, perhaps inadvertently, confirmed as much by calling United "such a big club" while acknowledging the transfer's proximity (3). Atalanta fans have seen this film before. A breakout midfielder, a Premier League giant, a fee that looks reasonable today and laughable within 18 months. The cycle is familiar, but it hurts every time.

Ederson's departure would be seismic enough on its own. But it is merely one tremor in a summer of upheaval. Palladino himself is expected to leave, and Maurizio Sarri stands on the verge of replacing him, with talks reportedly in the final stages (8) (31). The appointment is fascinating and risky in equal measure. Sarri builds teams that control possession and space, a philosophy that could not be further from the man-marking chaos Atalanta have built their identity around for the better part of a decade. The squad is not constructed for Sarri-ball. Then again, with Ederson leaving and further turnover inevitable, perhaps it will not need to be.

Elsewhere, Marco Palestra has emerged as a concrete target for Manchester City (23), while club executive D'Amico is linked with Roma's sporting director role (4). The exodus is not limited to the pitch.

There is one counter-narrative worth holding onto. Marten de Roon is in serious contention for the Netherlands World Cup squad, possibly in a defined specialist role (15) (16). At 34, the Dutchman remains the club's heartbeat, combative, intelligent, relentlessly consistent. If Sarri does arrive, De Roon's experience could prove the bridge between two very different eras.

What comes next is a question of conviction. Do Atalanta truly believe Sarri's football can work in Bergamo, or is this a reactive move from a club that lost its way after Gasperini? The answer will not come quickly, but the first signals, the language of the appointment, the early transfer business, the clarity of the project, will tell fans everything they need to know. Watch for the Ederson announcement. Watch for Sarri's first press conference. And watch whether De Roon is still an Atalanta player when the World Cup kicks off.
