Austin FC ends the drought, and the academy shows the way

A 1–2 win in Kansas City, and the relief is real

Sporting Kansas City 1–2 Austin FC at Sporting Park. Read that again, because it had been a while. Five matches without a win before this one, D L L L D, including a 1–4 home collapse against Nashville SC and a 1–2 home loss to Vancouver Whitecaps (2). Whatever the playoff math says, that run was grinding the squad down.

The win doesn't rescue the season. 14th of 15 in the Western Conference, 34 points from 31 games, minus 17 goal difference. This is a bad team that just did one good thing on the road. But it was away from home, against a direct rival in the standings, and it stopped the noise for a week.

Beating Sporting KC is a low bar, and Austin cleared it

Stephen Afrifa had his best match of the season at Sporting Park, and it still wasn't enough for Kansas City (5). That is what a 1–2 loss to Austin FC looks like from the other side: your best player peaks and you lose anyway. Kansas City's own report calls it miscues dooming them. Fine. But a struggling side still has to punish the errors, and too often this season Austin has not.

Jon Bell and Žan Kolmanič were both listed OUT for the trip (3). Two absences, no excuses made, and the back line held to a single goal conceded. That's the version of this team worth watching.

Shackell is the best coach in the building

Jason Shackell was voted 2026 MLS NEXT Pro coach of the year on Thursday after leading Austin FC II to the best record in the league, 65 points from 19-3-6, and the No. 1 overall playoff seed in his first year as head coach (1). First year. Zero prior head-coaching runway at this level.

Austin FC II host LAFC2 in a Western Conference Semifinal at Parmer Field (4). That's a home playoff game for a club whose first team is 14th. Fans on the subreddit are already saying the academy side isn't getting enough credit (Reddit 2). They're right. While the first team searches for identity, the second team has one: win the regular season, seed first, don't blink.

There's a question worth asking out loud, and I'll ask it: what is the point of a development pipeline that produces a coach of the year if the top job is insulated from it? Nothing at Austin FC suggests a change is coming (1). That is exactly why the next month matters.

What to watch

Real Salt Lake at home on Thursday, October 29, then LA Galaxy away on October 31 and Portland Timbers at home on November 8. Three games, two weeks, almost nothing left to play for in the table.

So watch the choices, not the points. Who starts in place of Bell and Kolmanič (3) is the tell. If the staff uses these three matches to test the young legs, that's a real answer about 2027. If it's the same eleven grinding out a losing season, then the only coach worth celebrating in this organisation will be the one at Parmer Field (1).

Twenty-four months ago this club was a playoff fixture. This week it won a road game against a bottom-half rival and it felt like a trophy. Sit with that.
