Four games, three defeats, one point
Austin FC's eight-game unbeaten run is gone, and it did not go quietly. It went with a 4–1 home defeat to Nashville SC on October 11, then a 3–1 loss at LAFC on October 14, then a 1–2 home defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps on October 17 (12)(1). One point from four matches. Fourteenth in the Western Conference on 31 points from 30 games, goal difference -18. The playoff conversation is now a maths problem, and the maths is losing.
Start with Nashville, because that is where the tone was set. Davy Arnaud did not dress it up afterwards. "We have to understand that we need 11 guys on the same page and pulling in the same direction," he said (8). Read that sentence again. A coach talking about effort and cohesion in October is telling you the problem is not the shape on the whiteboard.
LAFC: Bouanga and Son in the same game
LAFC 3–1 Austin FC at BMO Stadium was a mismatch on the flanks and in the final third (1)(7). Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-Min had a hand in all three goals (11). Son's finish was the one that will get clipped and shared (9)(10). Brandon Vazquez, Myrto Uzuni, Mark Delgado and Jacob Shaffelburg all had their minutes; Hugo Lloris and Brad Stuver picked the ball out of the net at opposite ends. Add Vancouver on October 17, when Ryan Gauld and Yadaly Diaby scored in the second half to turn the match (3)(6), Diaby on 71 minutes (2), and you have seven goals conceded in two games. That is not bad luck. That is a side that stops defending once the first one goes in.
Ramirez is the one thing standing
In a week where almost nothing worked, Christian Ramirez signed an extension through the 2027-28 season (4). He is the team's leading scorer on nine goals. Khaled El-Ahmad's explanation was plain: "Christian has earned this new contract through his performances and the qualities he brings to our group every day" (4). Nine goals from one forward on a team with a -18 goal difference tells you how little scoring has come from anyone else. Locking him down is right. It is also a warning about how much depends on him.
What to watch at Sporting Kansas City
The trip to Sporting Kansas City on October 25 is the next swing, with Real Salt Lake at home on October 29 and LA Galaxy away on October 31 behind it (13). Watch the first 20 minutes. Nashville and Vancouver both got comfortable early and Austin never got the game back. Arnaud's line about 11 guys pulling in the same direction needs an answer on the pitch, not in a press conference. If Ramirez gets service and the back line survives the opening spell, there is a season left to argue about.
