Bryne's week: a crushing win, a crushing loss, and the Haaland story

A week that gave Bryne everything and then took it back

Bryne won three games in a week and then got taken apart. That is the week in one line, and it is the reason nobody at the club should be drawing conclusions from any single result right now.

Start with the good part, because it was genuinely good. Bryne ran up a big win built on a hat-trick scored in 15 minutes (3). The player who scored it called it "a fantastic experience" (4). Not much to argue with there, and the manner of it matters more than the margin: a quarter of an hour is not a purple patch, it is a team in rhythm, pressing high and finishing what it creates.

The floor is still somewhere below them

Then Odd knocked them over (5). That is the counterweight, and it is the more instructive result. A side that can put away a game inside 15 minutes should not be getting undone in the same week, and until Bryne stop swinging between those two versions of themselves, the good afternoons will keep being one-offs rather than a platform.

The depth is doing the talking

Look past the first team and the week reads differently. Bryne 3 got a deciding performance from Andrine Maudal-Sævland (1). Bryne 2 made it three wins in a row (8). And several Bryne players are heading out on international duty (7). That last one is the number to watch, because it is the clearest signal of how the club is being judged from outside: clubs that produce internationals get their young players picked up. Depth like this is what makes a bad week survivable.

Where it all started

There is a reminder this week of how far the pipeline can run. Erling Haaland was at Bryne FK at the start of his career, and Bayern Munich once considered signing him, only to pass because they believed he would not get games behind Robert Lewandowski (9). Bayern's then-scout Hermann Gerland described phoning the club after watching him and asking why nobody had moved sooner (9). Bryne did not produce Haaland's whole career. They did have him first.

What to watch

The international break is coming, so the next thing to watch is who comes back fit and who comes back tired (7). Bryne's problem this week was never talent. It was consistency. The players away with their countries will tell you more about the rest of this season than either the hat-trick or the Odd defeat did.
