Chelsea 2–0 United: Lavia and Estevão change Alonso's week

Chelsea 2–0 Manchester United, and the answer was already in the building

Saturday at Stamford Bridge, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored, Lisandro Martínez got himself sent off, and Chelsea won a league game at home for the first time in a while (2)(14)(27). The scoreline is not the interesting part. The interesting part is who produced it.

Romeo Lavia started and ran the midfield. He called it a statement, and the English press agreed with him (2)(19)(23). Estevão got his first Premier League start and gave Alonso 12 touches in the opposition box and three chances created (15)(16). Alonso was direct afterwards: "This was the best response to show that he deserves more" (15).

Those are the two players Alonso had been leaving out. That is the story of the week, and it is a story about selection, not about the market.

Penders bought himself a quiet week

Mike Penders was the reason the Tottenham loss felt worse than one result. Against United he kept the clean sheet and made the save everyone talked about (4)(17)(22). A goalkeeper one week removed from an error gets judged on the next 90 minutes, and he answered them (20). Chelsea stopped shipping goals at the exact moment the noise around the position was loudest.

One injury from the bone

Maxence Lacroix is out for around two months with a hamstring tear (7). Aaron Anselmino is back around the squad but Alonso was blunt: "It will take a few weeks before he's fully fit" (11). That leaves Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill as the senior options, and Fofana is one of two defenders the club could make available in 2027 (12).

Chelsea were offered Ilya Zabarnyi in the summer and said no (8). Jules Koundé is now the "absolute priority" for January, with Alonso personally involved in the push (5)(21). Read those two facts together. This defence is not deep, it is surviving.

What to watch

Chelsea go to Sunderland on Sunday November 8 at 15:00 CET, fourth in the table on 16 points with a +4 goal difference (League table). The question for that XI is whether Lavia and Estevão stay in it, because the Tottenham eleven did not have them. Behind that, the January list: Koundé at centre-back and Alex Scott in midfield, with the club having moved on from Lamine Camara (5)(7)(11).

Chelsea have the players. The rest of the week is about whether Alonso keeps picking them.
