The point at Villa Park was not luck
Aston Villa 1–1 Fulham on Saturday, and the scoreline flatters the wrong team. Nicolas Jackson put Villa ahead with his eighth goal in ten games (16). Zion Suzuki then turned a routine ball into an own goal on 64 minutes (8). Fulham took the point, ended a seven-game losing run at Villa Park, and made it three Premier League games unbeaten (1) (2).
That last number is the one to hold onto. Nine points from nine games, 15th, goal difference -2. Not pretty. But the shape of the run is what matters: 1–0 over Hull City, 1–0 at Coventry, now 1–1 at Villa. Arbeloa's side has stopped conceding in bunches.
Two centre-halves, two very different problems
Calvin Bassey is Manchester United's top defensive target for the January window (10) (11). One assessment of the interest dates it to last season, when he "became one of the best defenders in the Premier League" (12). Fulham's captain, wanted by a club that has been exposed by injuries all autumn. That is not a rumour to shrug at.

Then there is David Affengruber. The Austrian arrived from La Liga and has been the season's quiet surprise. At Villa Park he had 82 touches (3). The analysis around him is that Fulham may not keep him long, which is both a compliment and a warning.
Read those two facts together and the January window looks less like a chance to strengthen than a fight to stand still. Fulham are already linked with Trabzonspor's Chibuike Nwaiwu, a 23-year-old defender, with a January offer under consideration (6). That link did not appear by accident.
Iwobi keeps counting
Alex Iwobi started at Villa Park and passed Mohamed Salah as Africa's second-most capped Premier League player, on 329 appearances (5). Kolo Toure is next on the list. Iwobi is 30 and has barely missed a game in five years. In a squad where availability has been the scarce resource, that is not a footnote. It is the reason Arbeloa can name a settled midfield at all.
What to watch
Newcastle United at Craven Cottage on Saturday, 16:00 CET. Fulham have won their last two home league games by a single goal and conceded once in three. Newcastle will test whether that is a platform or a plateau.
Arbeloa said after Villa that his team "can beat anyone" (7). Saturday at home is the first fixture that lets him prove it, and it is also the last league match before the Bassey question gets loud. If Fulham take three points off Newcastle, the 15th place starts to look like a floor. If they do not, the January conversation writes itself.
