Sixteen minutes, then the week changed
Rafael Leao came on against Gençlerbirliği and was off again 16 minutes later (1) (10). Galatasaray's medical statement says a strain in the groin muscle, and that the exact diagnosis lands after further tests (1) (8). Sat, Oct 17 was meant to be the soft landing after Barcelona. It became the week's biggest question instead. Okan Buruk pointed at the pitch: "zeminden kaynaklı" (8).
A pattern, not an accident
This is not a one-off. Leao still has no goal in a Galatasaray shirt, and the club statement itself frames the injury around overstretching (10). Two of the last five league games went to Galatasaray: Galatasaray 3–1 Kasimpasa on Fri, Oct 9, and now the 1–0 away win at Gençlerbirliği. In between, Trabzonspor 4–0 Galatasaray, and Galatasaray 1–4 Barcelona on Tue, Oct 13. Form reads W L W L W, 19 points, first in the Süper Lig with a +6 goal difference. First place that thin on margin is first place living on one striker's hamstring. Or groin.
Buruk's bench is being tested
The Barcelona scoreline exposed the gap between Galatasaray's domestic floor and its European ceiling. A squad that grinds out 1–0 wins on the road and loses by three goals at home to Barcelona is a squad with depth in numbers but not in difference-makers. Which puts the January rumour in a sharper light: Galatasaray reportedly weighing a move for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, with Barcelona also in the race (9) (11). Paulo Futre called him "a great person and a great player" (11). A captain's signing mid-season is what you do when you think the current group has a ceiling.
Lille on Wednesday, Fenerbahçe on Monday
Training at Kemerburgaz Metin Oktay Tesisleri started with a full-sided game ahead of Lille on Wed, Oct 21 (2) (7). On the other side, Lille have issued their own injury bulletin on goalkeeper Berke Özer, with Davide Ancelotti commenting on the national keeper's health (3). Then Fenerbahçe at home on Mon, Oct 26, nine days after the Gençlerbirliği trip. Watch the Leao test result first. If he is out, Buruk has to build a Champions League away plan and a derby plan around the same missing player.
