Eight games, zero contributions, and a meeting at the top
Leroy Sane has played seven matches for Galatasaray this season and has not scored or assisted a single goal. That is why the club hierarchy has called him in for clear-the-air talks (1). The immediate trigger was the friendly against Pendikspor, a 3–3 draw in which Sane's unwillingness was the story, not the score (6) (24). When a signing of his profile produces nothing across seven outings, the conversation stops being about form.
Galatasaray sit second on 13 points from six games, with a goal difference of +3 and a run of W W L W L. The two defeats tell the real story: 3–1 away to Sporting CP in the Champions League on September 9, then 4–0 away to Trabzonspor on September 19. Both away, both heavy. The home record is fine. The away record is where this team's ceiling shows, and Trabzonspor exposed it without much resistance.
The president has taken the microphone
Dursun Özbek spent the week fighting on two fronts. On the club's founding anniversary he called Galatasaray "an institution without equal, with its culture and its deep sense of belonging" (9). Then he turned to the refereeing crisis and did not blink. The MHK has no functioning leadership, its president is under arrest, and the Süper Lig restarts regardless. "We play on Friday. There is no MHK president, he is under arrest," Özbek said, demanding the TFF end its silence before a ball is kicked (13) (14) (20). He is the loudest voice in Turkish football this week, and he has made the federation's silence his issue.
The defence cannot stay on the pitch
Wilfried Singo's return has been pushed back again (2), and the club still will not put a date on it (13). The right side of the back four has been a rotating cast since August. That shortage is the context for the January plan: two summer arrivals, Bitshiabu and Ugochukwu, are already being linked with exits before they have settled (7) (18). Signings that do not stick are not depth, they are cost. A club chasing a title and a Champions League campaign cannot carry both problems in the same position group.
What to watch
Kasimpasa at home on Friday, October 9, is the first real test after the international break (9). İlkay Gündoğan has been the standout in training during that break and is in line to start (10). Four days later, Barcelona arrive in the Champions League on October 13. Two home games in five days will tell us whether Sane's meeting changed anything and whether second place is a platform or a ceiling.
