Nyoni starts as Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield

A 19-year-old in the biggest game of the autumn

Andoni Iraola picked Trey Nyoni for his first Premier League start against Arsenal at Anfield (2)(3). Not a cup tie, not a dead rubber, not twenty minutes off the bench. The engine room against Mikel Arteta's midfield, with Rice, Guimaraes and Odegaard lined up opposite him (1). Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai are on the bench. That is the whole argument about this squad in one team sheet.

Four wins and a warning

Liverpool have won four of five, and the only loss in that run was the one that mattered most: Manchester City 3–0 at Anfield on October 11. Since then: 6–3 away at LASK Linz, 2–1 at Brentford, 4–3 at home to Villarreal, 2–0 against Brighton. Fifteen points from eight games, fifth, +3. Look at those scorelines and you see a side that outscores its problems. Three conceded in Linz, three against Villarreal. Brighton is the only clean sheet in the run, and that was Brighton.

Nyoni starting is what a team does when it trusts its own academy to cover a gap rather than hide it. Bradley Barcola also comes in (2). Iraola has made the attacking end of this team his project and left the balance to sort itself out. Against Arsenal, that gets tested properly for the first time since the City defeat.

January is already being planned

Two senior squad players are lined up for the exit in January, with Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo the names in question (4)(7). Neither is a starter in the current thinking, and Endo sitting on the bench while a teenager starts ahead of him tells you where this is going. Selling squad depth in a season with a Champions League run is a decision, not a formality. It only works if the replacement is real.

The other contract question is louder. Ronald Araujo, on loan from Barcelona, says he is grateful for the support and that a permanent call is months away (6)(9). Fans have already made up their minds about him. He is a fixture in the XI, in a defence that has kept one clean sheet in five.

What to watch next

Fenerbahce away on Wednesday, then Crystal Palace on Sunday. The European trip is where the Nyoni decision gets judged for real: a hostile away night in Istanbul is a different exam from an Anfield afternoon. Keep Szoboszlai's minutes in view too, because if he is being managed now, the November schedule will show the cost.
