The goal that will define this weekend
Dijan Vukojevic scored from 65 metres. Malmö FF 1–2 Degerfors at home, and the loss is bad enough on its own, but the goal is what will linger. Robin Olsen was off his line. Vukojevic saw it. "Jag ser honom långt ute och det är bara att köra," he told TV4 afterwards (1) (4). Halfway line and then some. Diego Garcia scored again for Malmö, his second in two matches after the dramatic late winner at BP (2) (23). It was not enough. Degerfors arrived on an eleven-match winless run and left with all three points (22). That stings.
The table does not sugarcoat it. Seventh place, 23 points from 15 matches, a goal difference that has shrunk to five. Two home defeats in the last three, and last week's win at BP was snatched four minutes from time. Malmö are not in free fall. They are stuck in a pattern: just functional enough to stay within reach, just brittle enough to lose at home to a team that had not won since April.
The defence is a puzzle with missing pieces
The back line against Degerfors told the story. Busanello suspended. Kurtulus suspended. Noah John out with a hamstring strain (8). Theodor Lundbergh, 17, started again at left back, a position he has publicly described as not his favourite (12). He has played every match this season, all 15, which is both impressive and an indictment of the squad's depth (11).

Colin Rösler is gone. The 26-year-old defender completed a move to Danish champions AGF on a three-year deal (27) (18). That is one fewer option at centre-back. New right-back signing Warren Kamanzi is not ready. Gaute Helstrup was clear: "Han behöver tid för att komma igång fysiskt. Han är inte med nu så vi får ta det vecka för vecka" (21). No debut in sight.
Sporting director Philip Berglund admitted recently that the squad has been "a little scattered" over the past eighteen months. A defence held together by a teenager playing out of position is not a counterargument, it is the proof.
Garcia scores, Höög rises, Djuric stays
There are small anchors. Garcia scored again, a week after his winner a minute into his debut at BP (23) (2). Two matches, two goals, and he has already made himself indispensable. Anton Höög has started three straight since the summer break, and Helstrup is clear about the plan: a future role as an eight, contract through 2030 (13). Andrej Djuric had interest from Raków Częstochowa and said no. "Jag stortrivs sedan den nya tränaren kom in," he said (14). A defender who actively wants to stay is worth more than points right now.
What to watch
GAIS away on Sunday, August 16. That is the next test, and it comes fast. The suspensions clear, John might be fit, but Kamanzi remains out and the defensive shape is anyone's guess. Malmö need three points, not just because seventh is uncomfortable, but because the gap to the European places is starting to feel real.
