The week Taha Ali left and Helstrup's Malmö took shape
Taha Ali is gone. The winger is heading to PAOK for a medical, confirmed by multiple outlets this week (6). Pontus Jansson did not dress it up: "Det kommer aldrig komma någon som honom igen." He is right. Ali was the player who could produce something from nothing, and replacing that unpredictability is not a scouting task, it is a tactical rethink. Malmö dismantled IFK Göteborg 0–4 without him (14), and the performance was Helstrup's dream start, Anton Höög scored his first Allsvenskan goal two minutes after coming on, Diego Garcia debuted, Andrej Djuric got off the mark. Winning like that makes transitions look seamless. The test comes when the match is tight, the space disappears, and nobody steps up to do the unexpected.
Kamanzi in, Larsen staying: the defence rebuilds
Warren Kamanzi trained with the squad on Saturday, reuniting with Helstrup from their Tromsø days (9). The full-back said what you want a signing to say: "Jag har drömt om att spela i en klubb där saker betyder lite mer" (1). That is not PR fluff, it is a player who knows he is joining something bigger than a stepping stone. Meanwhile, Jens Stryger Larsen is close to extending to 2027, a direct result of Helstrup's arrival (7) (8). Sjöstrand's season over, Ekong's future unclear
Oscar Sjöstrand is out for the rest of the season with a suspected cruciate ligament injury (5). That is the kind of news that lands harder because of the timing, Ali exits one wing, Sjöstrand goes down on the other, and suddenly the wide options Helstrup inherited look very different. Emmanuel Ekong was left out of the squad entirely for the Göteborg match, still struggling after a knee injury in May (2). He wants to stay. He has 3.5 years on his contract. But a new coach's first teamsheet is a statement, and not being in the matchday group when the competition is wide open tells you something. The clock ticks loudly in those situations.
Rosengren in the crosshairs
Otto Rosengren has Middlesbrough and FC Köln watching. RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim are also in the wider picture, and Kim Hellberg would take him at IFK Göteborg without hesitation (13). That volume of noise around a 21-year-old says plenty about the talent, but it also forces a decision. Malmö just sold Ali. Losing Rosengren in the same window would strip the squad of two of its most creative pieces. The club has shown it will not block a move when terms are right. The question is whether holding firm on this one matters more than the fee.
What to watch
Kalmar away on Monday. Djuric is suspended, which opens the door for Kurtulus to step straight back in (11). It is a fixture that should yield points, Kalmar have not been convincing, but it is also the first real test of whether the Göteborg demolition was a new-manager bounce or something Helstrup can reproduce week after week. With Ali gone, Sjöstrand out, and Rosengren's head possibly turned, the attacking shape that worked so well will need to prove it can travel.
