Kalmar, two goals down twice, and a point that reveals the spine
Twice behind, twice level. Malmö FF's 2–2 draw at Kalmar was messy, error-strewn, and not the kind of performance that wins titles. But it also showed something that was not there in spring: resilience. "In the spring we would have lost this match," the post-match assessment went (18). Noah Åstrand John got his first MFF goal, Adrian Skogmar grabbed the second equaliser (11)(19). The three-match winning run is over. The feeling that this team has a pulse under Gaute Helstrup is not.
The Ekong situation is now a problem, not a departure
Emmanuel Ekong was meant to be gone. Malmö FF had agreed a deal with Hajduk Split, the winger was omitted from the Kalmar squad, and the exit looked sealed (11)(12). Then the medical happened. The transfer collapsed, Ekong failed the examination, and now he requires surgery (8)(10)(16). A player the club had already mentally moved on from is suddenly staying, injured, with no return date. That is not just bad luck. It is a squad-planning failure that leaves Helstrup carrying a forward who cannot play and cannot be sold. For a team already struggling to get Daniel Gudjohnsen meaningful minutes, the logjam just got more complicated.
Dahlin returns, and so does the goalkeeper question
Johan Dahlin started against Kalmar in place of Robin Olsen and is now reportedly close to a contract extension (9)(11). After the final whistle, Dahlin was involved in a heated discussion with injured defender Pontus Jansson (11). Whatever was said, the image matters: a 38-year-old goalkeeper arguing with the club's most vocal leader is not nothing. Olsen is racing to be ready for the Elfsborg match at home, while Gabriel Busanello returns but Warren Kamanzi's debut is still on hold (6). Three goalkeepers on the books, two centre-backs injured, and the veteran suddenly at the centre of the story.
What to watch
Elfsborg arrive without Marcus Rohdén and Taylor Silverholt, with Ari Sigurpalsson also a doubt (3). That is a weakened opponent and a chance Helstrup cannot afford to let slip. Jack Henrysson, the 18-year-old centre-back signed from BK Olympic, is now in the building (4)(15), and with Jansson out and the back line leaking, he might matter sooner than anyone planned. The title is not gone, but 7th with 20 points from 13 games means the margin is already thin. Beat Elfsborg and the Kalmar draw looks like a stumble. Drop points and the questions get louder.
