Malmö brief: Berglund outlines Scandinavian coach search, Larsen set to leave

Malmö FF fans have waited for clarity on the manager search since Miguel Ángel Ramírez left the club. On Tuesday, new sporting director Philip Berglund delivered it.

New sporting director sets June 14 target for coach hire

Philip Berglund has made his first public statements since taking the role, and the focus is squarely on the managerial search. The ideal timeline? Having a new coach in place when the team regroups on June 14.

"Det optimala är att ha det klart när vi startar upp den 14:e (juni)," Berglund said (1).

That gives the club just under two weeks to finalise an appointment.

Scandinavian profile preferred, 6–7 names in the frame

Berglund confirmed Malmö are leaning toward a Scandinavian appointment. "Vi har landat i att det nog funkar bäst med ett skandinaviskt namn," he told Expressen (2).

Between six and seven candidates are being considered to fill the vacancy (4). One name already off the list: Eirik Horneland, who has opted for another opportunity. Reports suggest Hammarby are now focusing on Henrik Rydström instead (5).

Summer strategy: Sell more than you buy

Berglund was blunt about the transfer window philosophy. "Vi kommer sälja fler spelare än vi köper," he stated (6).

It signals a pragmatic summer, with outgoings expected to outnumber arrivals. For a squad sitting ninth after ten rounds with a flat goal difference, it's a message that the rebuild may take time.

Jens Stryger Larsen expected to depart

Multiple reports point to defender Jens Stryger Larsen leaving this summer (3) (7). The Danish international's exit would follow the broader trend Berglund has already telegraphed: a window defined by sales rather than signings.

Georgson backs Malmö turnaround after tough spring

Former Malmö figure Andreas Georgson believes the team can turn things around despite a difficult spring. He pointed to the experience within the squad as the key to a second-half resurgence (8).

The 5–2 win over Halmstads BK on Saturday already suggests the corner may have been turned. Erik Botheim's eight-minute hat-trick stole the headlines that afternoon, and you go into the break with some momentum at last.
