Malmö's summer clear-out meets a Djurgården crisis game

A point that changes nothing, and a window that changes everything

Malmö FF 1–1 Hammarby IF, and the women rescued something from a match they had no business being in at half-time. Zecira Musovic said the team were "brutal, catastrophically bad" before the break and had luck on their side that it was only 1–0 (2) (18). A comeback point in a top clash sounds fine on paper. Against the team you are chasing, it does not move you forward.

The men are 7th, and the clear-out is the story

This is not where Malmö FF live. 26 points from 17 games, seventh in Allsvenskan, with a head-spinning form line of draw, loss, win, loss, win (1) (2). The sporting director Philip Berglund is not pretending the squad is finished. He says more deals could happen before the window shuts on 31 August (3). Erik Botheim has personal terms agreed with Trabzonspor, and Malmö want at least €6m to let him go, with PAOK also in the picture (8) (13). Daníel Gudjohnsen wants to go on loan to Arminia Bielefeld, and right now the club is telling him no (6) (14). Salifou Soumah is already out the door, loaned to Panetolikos with an option to buy (9) (17). One striker is half-bought by Turkey, another is asking to leave, a third has left. That is a clear-out, and it reads like a club deciding the season needs a different group of players than the one it started with.

Injured, questioned, and short at right-back

The doubts are piling up in exactly the wrong week. Gabriel Busanello missed training ahead of the Djurgården game, and Anders Christiansen's place is being questioned (1). Coach Gaute Helstrup calls it "just small things", but a derby-sized match on Monday does not care about small things (1). At right-back the options are so thin that midfielder Adrian Skogmar has said he is willing to fill in there, after a suspension and a sale emptied the position (8) (12). On the women's side it is worse: Nathalie Hoff Persson is out with a knee injury that coach Jonas Valfridsson says is not in the lightest format (9) (7). Pontus Jansson is still deep in ACL rehab (11) (28).

What to watch

Djurgården come to Eleda Stadion on Monday, and they arrive after two straight losses that prompted an internal crisis meeting (23). Two fragile teams, one under pressure to hold the top, the other chasing a season that is slipping. If Busanello and Christiansen do not pass fitness, Monday tells you exactly how much depth this clear-out has actually left behind. And watch Botheim's name on the teamsheet. A striker with one foot in Trabzon starting a must-not-lose home game would say more about the situation than any sporting-director quote.
