Marmoush delivers in Seoul, but the real work starts now
Omar Marmoush scored twice. City came from behind. Atlético de Madrid were beaten 3–1 in Seoul, and the Asia tour ended with a trophy-lift feeling (1) (3). It was a pre-season friendly, of course. But the manner of it, trailing to Jorge Domínguez's opener before Ait-Nouri and Marmoush turned the game, matters because this squad needed a reason to believe the post-Guardiola era can feel like winning.
The result is not the story, though. The story is what happens between now and Bournemouth on August 23.
Rodri is the season in one player
Maresca said it plainly: "He will be in Manchester on Friday" (5). Rodri, returning from surgery, back at the training ground. No player in this squad is less replaceable. City without Rodri are a tactical idea searching for a spine, and the midfielder's fitness will define the opening weeks. Maresca draws a line with the captaincy
The new manager will handpick his captain. Not a player vote, not Guardiola's democratic model. A personal choice, with an English presence in the leadership group reportedly preferred (17). It is a small decision with a loud message. Maresca is not caretaking the Guardiola legacy, he is building his own authority. Whoever wears the armband against Bournemouth will be the first public signal of what Maresca values. Watch the call closely.
Three midfielders, three directions
The squad is shifting while nobody is looking. Savinho wants Tottenham but City are blocking the exit until Pedro Neto is secured (6). Tijjani Reijnders has interest from Nottingham Forest at £55m, which would represent a quick profit on the £46m City paid Milan (2). And Alexis Mac Allister is now a genuine target, which could trigger Real Madrid's move for Bouaddi (9) (12).
Maresca is not quietly tweaking a title-winning machine. He is rebuilding the engine room in real time, and the squad that faces Bournemouth will not be the one that closes the window.
What to watch
