Villa Park, and the first crack
Aston Villa 2–1 Manchester City. Seven league wins to start the season, then a defeat Maresca insists his side did not deserve (2)(7). The nuance does not matter much. City are top of the Premier League on 21 points, but only on goal difference ahead of Arsenal, and the cushion they had built in eight games is gone.
Nicolas Jackson and Erling Haaland are both named in the fallout from that match (1). Maresca's read was blunt: "We lost because we probably are not being clinical enough in their box" (2). That is the right diagnosis and the wrong alibi. This is a team that scored three at Anfield and five against AEK Athens, so the finishing is not the recurring problem. The shape of the week is. A 2–4 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League sits two days after the Liverpool win, and Villa is the second defeat in three.
Cherki off at half-time, again
Rayan Cherki was withdrawn at the interval against Villa, the same as he was against PSG, and Maresca's irritation about it is now a public talking point rather than a dressing-room detail (8). Two half-time hooks in quick succession is a pattern, and patterns are how a coach tells a player something without saying it.

The counterweight is Abdukodir Khusanov. He has made two starts and topped City's possession and defensive metrics in both, despite only starting four of eight league games (1). Khusanov is the kind of player you build a response around, not the fall guy of a bad result. Ayyoub Bouaddi, 19, is still waiting, left on the bench at Villa Park (3). Maresca has been patient with the young players. Patience becomes a cost when the first team is losing.
What the Rodri deal looks like from Barcelona
Hans Flick called Rodri "eine Bereicherung" and said he is very glad the midfielder is at Barcelona (4). City sold him for €60m in the summer. Whether that fee was the fair price is a question Barcelona are answering on the pitch every week while City work out a midfield without him. Carvajal reportedly steered Rodri away from Real Madrid and toward Catalonia (6), which means City's transfer business now depends partly on what rivals advise.
Brighton on Saturday, then Leipzig
Aston Villa is the result that ends the pleasant part of the season. What follows is the test: Brighton & Hove Albion at home on 31 October, then RB Leipzig away in the Champions League on 4 November, then Nottingham Forest on 7 November.
Dias has already set the line. "Whatever happens we need to react to it" (2). The response starts with whether Khusanov is still in the XI at Brighton, and whether Cherki is still on the pitch at half-time. City are also reportedly scouting Club Brugge's Nicolo Tresoldi, a nine-goal Champions League forward, as a backup to Haaland (9)(11). That is not a January problem yet. It is a sign they know the squad has one striker and no margin.
