Maresca's debut needed two late goals, not one
The Enzo Maresca era almost began with a mutiny before it began with three points. Manchester City trailed Bournemouth 0–1 deep into the second half of the season opener and turned it around at the death, 2–1, through Marc Guéhi and Josko Gvardiol (2). Maresca blew a kiss to the stands at full time (1). His team was not good for long stretches. It won anyway, and on opening day that is the only number that matters.
The winner came from Gvardiol deep into stoppage time, after a pass from Rayan Cherki, the substitute who changed the match (1) (24). Tavernier had put Bournemouth ahead in the first half (32). For a club that spent the summer hearing about life after Guardiola, falling at home on day one would have been a story that followed them for weeks. It did not happen, and that is the point.
What the late show hides
Strip the euphoria away and the performance was thin for seventy minutes. Erling Haaland did not score, again, and the attack looked short of rhythm until the changes arrived (11). City controlled the ball without hurting Bournemouth, which is the exact shape of the problems Guardiola's departure was supposed to fix.

Squad news makes this trickier. Jeremy Doku is out for two to three weeks with a calf injury (13). Summer signing Elliot Anderson came off injured in his Premier League debut, and no timeline has been confirmed (13). That is two wide options unavailable before the season has properly started, and the fixture list does not wait.
Bouaddi is the Rodri answer, eventually
The deal dominating the news beyond the match is Ayyoub Bouaddi. Manchester City have agreed a fee of roughly £86m with Lille for the midfielder (5) (15). Lille's technical director Sylvain Armand effectively confirmed the move is close (5). Italian reports put the figure at €100m (12). Bouaddi is 18 and is being signed as the long-term successor to Rodri, which tells you what the club thinks its midfield needs.
He will not fix the opening weeks. But the intent is real, and it is the kind of signing that signals the post-Guardiola project is being built with ambition rather than caution.
What to watch
Crystal Palace away comes on Friday, August 28, then Coventry at home the following weekend. Doku is out, Anderson's status is unclear, and the side that won on Sunday did it with substitutes doing the damage. Maresca has three days to find a starting eleven that does not need two late goals. That is the test, and it starts at Selhurst Park.
