Rodri tells City he wants Real Madrid, Maresca builds anyway

Rodri wants out, and everything hinges on the response

Rodri has told Manchester City he wants to join Real Madrid this summer. Sporting reasons, family reasons, the full package (12). This is not a rumour drifting through the Spanish press. It is the player drawing a line, and City now have to decide whether to fight it, price it, or accept the inevitable.

The numbers tell the story of that fight. City want €80 million. Madrid have capped their offer at €60 million (8) (20). PSG have also made contact, which at least gives City a second bidder if the stand-off with Madrid hardens (11) (21). One report says City are willing to wait a full year and keep Rodri for another season rather than sell cheaply now (14). That is leverage, but it is also a gamble, an unhappy Rodri in a midfield already being rebuilt under a new manager is not the same as the Rodri who ran games for Guardiola.

Maresca's quiet rebuild is already underway

Lost in the Rodri noise is how much work the new manager has already done. Mick Brown, the former United and Blackburn scout, called City's recent business "outstanding", Elliot Anderson arriving ahead of United and Liverpool, Marc Guehi for £20 million in January, Antoine Semenyo added to the attack (2). His verdict: City have "blown them out of the water" while rivals scramble.

Khusanov has signed a long-term deal at the back (10). Joel Ndala has left permanently for Cercle Brugge, a City Football Group club, a clean, tidy exit for an academy graduate (17). On the incoming side, City are edging ahead of Arsenal for Barcelona youngster Marc Bernal, who is being framed as a potential long-term Rodri replacement (18). A 16-year-old, Mishel Nduka, has been signed from Arsenal's academy, a rival gem plucked away.

And then there is Pedro Neto. The Chelsea winger is a confirmed target, with Maresca's prior relationship from their time together adding weight (5) (16). Reports that Chelsea directors no longer see a certain winger as "untouchable" fit the same pattern (4). Vinicius Junior's camp has also reopened contact with City amid a contract stand-off at Madrid (3). None of this is concrete yet, but the direction is clear: Maresca is reshaping the squad with or without Rodri.

The 115 charges are still there

Maresca has spoken publicly about the 115 charges case, and Liverpool are reportedly watching closely, with talk of a potential £100 million claim if the verdict goes against City (6). It is the shadow over everything, recruitment, contract renewals, the ability to hold firm on a Rodri valuation. No verdict has landed, but the new manager addressing it at all tells you how inescapable it has become.

What to watch

Rodri is the story that will define the rest of this window. The €20 million gap between City and Madrid is not insurmountable, and PSG's entry gives City something they did not have a week ago: options (20) (21). If Rodri does go, expect the Bernal links to accelerate and the Neto pursuit to sharpen. The new season is weeks away. Maresca's City will look different regardless. The only question is how different.
