The week the numbers did the talking
Manchester United's week ended on a pitch in Manchester, but not at Old Trafford. Manchester United Women beat West Ham United 2–1 at the Progress with Unity Stadium, the club's first WSL win of the season and a second victory in the space of seven days (3) (6). Elisabeth Terland and Ella Toone drove it, Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Anna Sandberg held it (1) (3). Eva Olid's side are up to ninth. Everything else around this club this week was about subtraction.
322 jobs, one number that dwarfs a season
The men's team did not play. United sit 12th on five points from five, goal difference zero, one win in their last five (W D W L D). If you want the real headline from the week, it is 322. That is how many staff are being cut, close to 30 percent of the workforce, with the media department losing around 45 percent of its people and commercial 44 percent (31). Ratcliffe's stated aim is a sustainable structure. That may be true and still land as gutting for people who worked there. Five league games in, the football has not earned the right to distract from it.
Bruno is playing through pain, and United cannot afford it
Bruno Fernandes will miss Portugal's game against Norway through injury, with Jorge Jesus calling it a "complicated issue" picked up against Wales (7) (8) (27). He is 31 and has now gone four United games without a goal or an assist (20). The captain is the one player this squad genuinely cannot replace, and he has been carrying something for weeks. Carlos Baleba, the £61m summer signing, is close to a comeback after an injury-delayed debut and could feature soon (19). Michael Carrick needs him to arrive as advertised.
January is already the plan
Five games in, United are shopping for defenders. Alejandro Balde has slipped to third choice at Barcelona and a renewed January approach is on the table, though a European giant has now entered the race for their top left-back target (2) (4) (17) (30). Tyrick Mitchell at £25m is the budget route (29). RB Leipzig's Castello Lukeba is the €65m centre-back option (26). Feyenoord's Jerayno Schaken fits the INEOS youth blueprint, with Hull City sniffing around (12). Brentford's Kevin Schade is a January name alongside Arsenal and Liverpool (5). The reason that list exists: United went into this season with an attacking midfield gap because Fermin Lopez chose to stay at Barcelona (13).
What to watch against Tottenham
Spurs at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 10, 18:30 CEST. One league win in five is the record Carrick has to fix. Bruno's fitness is the first question, Baleba's first minutes the second. And the JJ Gabriel saga has not closed: Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid are all still in it for United's best academy talent, with reports he is unsettling the Under-21 dressing room while he pushes for an exit (25) (33). Three threads, one game to start answering them.
