Carrick drops Bruno and United collapse again at Old Trafford

The captain on the bench and the second half he could not rescue

Michael Carrick dropped Bruno Fernandes for the visit of Bournemouth. United lost 0–3 at Old Trafford, and by the time Rayan and Marcus Tavernier had scored inside five minutes before the interval, the boos were already ringing round the ground (1)(14)(19). Fernandes had criticised the manager's tactics in public, and Carrick answered by leaving his captain out. That is the week in one call. A coach who benches his own captain is a coach with nothing left to protect.

The goals were not the problem, the shape was

Gary Neville did not hedge. "Yoro at right-back is awful," he said, calling it "a nightmare for Manchester United" and "a real problem for Carrick" (16). Look at the Tavernier goal: Yoro loses his footing, Adrien Truffert keeps him honest, the pass is simple (1). Leny Yoro is a centre-back learning a position United asked him to learn in a crisis week. Justin Kluivert picked up the assist on the third, Evanilson finishing it. Carrick lost the midfield as well, with Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba given the ballast job and Tielemans withdrawn early (11).

Seven points from seven, and a squad argument underneath

Fifteenth with seven points from seven. One league win all season, two wins in eleven in all competitions (24). That is not a blip, it is a trend with a fixture list attached. Paul Scholes went for the recruitment: United's summer arrivals are "a million miles" from the level needed to win the league (34). Scholes is right about the standard and not especially fair about the individuals. The players bought are decent. The plan around them has not been. JJ Gabriel's exit has stalled too, despite two claimed agreements (17), and the left-back chase for Alejandro Balde now has Roma in it (35).

Who replaces him, and who would actually want it

Fabrizio Romano has narrowed the list to Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte, and was blunt that Unai Emery is "completely focused on Aston Villa" and Fabian Hürzeler on Brighton (24). Reports say Howe would demand four signings before taking it (9). A manager setting conditions before he arrives is a manager telling you what he thinks of the squad. The board knows that too.

What to watch at Chelsea

Chelsea away on Saturday, 13:30 CET, then Roma at home in the Champions League on November 3. Fernandes should be back in that XI regardless of who picks it, because there is no version of this team that functions without him and the bench experiment produced zero goals and three conceded. Chelsea will press United's right side from the first minute. Whoever plays there will tell you whether Carrick still has a plan, or whether someone else gets to build one.
