Matthijs de Ligt walked through the doors at Carrington this week, alone, working through an individual recovery programme after back surgery (2). The midfield search is now a scramble

Joao Gomes of Wolves is the new name at the top of the list, with Liverpool now making direct contact to hijack the move (3) (16) (19). Manu Kone has been contacted in recent hours with a €50m offer being readied (5) (18). Adam Wharton is off the table, priced at £116m by Crystal Palace (10). That is four midfielders actively being chased and two others monitored. This is not a strategy. This is a club working down a list in real time because Plan A hit a medical wall. Two midfielders are needed after Casemiro's exit, and right now none have signed.
Lammens, Greenwood, and the margins that fund the window
Senne Lammens had the worst night of his young career on Friday. His mistake gifted Spain the opening goal in a 2–1 World Cup quarter-final defeat for Belgium, and the Belgian press called it "the most difficult moment of his young career" (1) (20). He will return to United with that weight on his shoulders, and Carrick has a decision to make about how he handles a goalkeeper whose confidence just took a very public hit.
On the incoming front, the Greenwood sell-on clause is the quiet win of the summer. Fenerbahce are closing in on a deal that would net United €16m to €20m, with a July 17 deadline for the move (8). That is meaningful money for INEOS, and it could be the difference in getting one of those midfield deals over the line.
What to watch
Pre-season training is underway at Carrington. De Ligt is there. The midfielders are not. Carrick has two weeks before the first friendly and a squad that still does not have its engine room rebuilt. The Ederson situation needs resolving one way or the other, because every alternative target is now being circled by rivals. Liverpool want Gomes. Newcastle want Ederson (18). The club that moves first wins. United are not moving first.
