The Atalanta midfielder is 26, costs €45m, and becomes the first major signing of the post-Casemiro midfield. This is not a saga. A player just told the world his move to Old Trafford is functionally complete. When does that ever happen?
The answer: when the club has done its work early. Michael Carrick wanted a midfielder who can cover ground and progress the ball. Ederson is that profile, and the deal being wrapped before July is a signal that United are not waiting around for the market to set its own pace.

The rebuild does not pause for sentiment. Mateus Fernandes is next on the list, personal terms agreed, United the most advanced club in talks, but a fee gap with West Ham persists, and Tottenham are circling (4) (7) (10) (11) (25) (26). The gap is significant: north of £15m between what United want to pay and what West Ham demand. That is a real negotiation, not posturing.
Nathan De Cat, a 17-year-old Belgian prodigy, has also been identified as a long-term replacement (24). That is sensible squad planning. But Fernandes is the one who matters right now, because Ederson alone does not fix a hollowed-out midfield.
Two midfielders who will not be coming (and one who might)

Eduardo Camavinga is different. Real Madrid have opened the door to a €60m exit, and United have made contact (20). What to watch
The Ederson announcement will drop any day now. The Fernandes negotiation is the next domino, Tottenham's interest is real, and West Ham will not budge without a fight. Rashford's future needs resolving before pre-season, because Carrick cannot plan an attack around a player who may be in north London by August. And if Camavinga is truly available at €60m, United should be on the phone every day until Madrid say yes or no.
