Manchester United Women carry the week
Manchester United Women beat Liverpool 1–0 at the Progress with Unity Stadium, Julia Zigiotti scoring early (7) (21). That is four wins in a row for Eva Olid's side. It is also the only result at this club in the past seven days that nobody has to qualify with an excuse.
Ella Toone says Olid has corrected a flaw in Marc Skinner's approach, that the new manager wants the team playing attacking football and it suits her (7). Olid's own read is blunter. The high press is the identity and she is not changing it, but the final third has to be better (21). A manager demanding more after four straight wins is a manager with a standard. United's women are the part of this club currently being held to one.
Carrick has two wins in seven, and the bench looks thin
Michael Carrick has won two of seven matches across all competitions (8). Bryan King's verdict is not a swipe, it is a diagnosis: Carrick is a good footballer and a nice fella who had a great run last season, but he needs an experienced figure alongside him (8). The club's answer may not be a coach at all. Football Insider reports United will prioritise new defensive signings in the coming windows (5). One clean sheet in seven games explains both the league position and the recruitment plan.

De Ligt back, and none too soon
Matthijs de Ligt played a behind-closed-doors friendly against FC Lausanne-Sport, his first step back after close to a year out (14) (2). Nobody should expect him to fix a back four on his own, and his rating and transfer value have dropped during the layoff (2). But Carrick has spent the autumn patching a defence around absences, and this is his first genuine option in a while.
The books are the real ceiling
United's debt has reached £1.1bn since the Glazers' takeover in 2005. Stefan Borson's point is mechanical rather than moral: with debt at that level the club cannot raise more of it, and that stops them spending on footballers (4). The New Trafford project could require another £1bn, roughly £100m a month over 24 months (6). So when you read that United are tracking a 20-year-old winger alongside two other clubs, understand where that sits in the queue (23). Transfer ambition is now a function of the balance sheet.
What to watch
Tottenham at home on Saturday, October 10, then Atlético Madrid away in the Champions League on October 13, then Leeds away on October 18. Nine days, three games, and United go in 12th on five points with zero goal difference (fixtures). JJ Gabriel turns 16 on October 6, the date his future becomes a live decision rather than a story (9) (13). Two wins in seven is survivable in October. It stops being survivable if Spurs leave Old Trafford with the points.
