"We wanted to be careful with that" (10). The words were calm. The history is not. Mount has started 24 league matches across two seasons at Old Trafford. Every knock triggers the same reflex now: here we go again.
The football before his exit was fine. Ibrahim Mbaye scored early for PSG, Bryan Mbeumo equalised, and the friendly drifted toward its conclusion without consequence (1) (12). Results in pre-season are not the point. The point is that Carrick has spent the summer carefully assembling a fit squad, and the midfield, the thinnest part of the group, just lost its most versatile operator, even briefly, and even if only as a scare.
Tielemans arrives and looks the part
Youri Tielemans completed 100% of his passes in his first United appearance (9) (11). That is a friendly stat and it is also exactly the profile Carrick has been missing: a midfielder who receives the ball under pressure, turns, and finds a forward pass without delay. The Belgian press called him the signing of the season before a competitive ball has been kicked (6). Next to Bruno Fernandes in a double pivot, he looked like someone who has been playing in the Premier League for six years, not a new arrival finding his feet.

For 45 minutes, that midfield pairing offered control and progressive intent. The version of United that has Tielemans fit and Fernandes in rhythm can compete. The version without Mount, without full match sharpness, and with the deeper midfield role still unresolved is the one that finished 16th last season.
Rashford is back. Now what?
Marcus Rashford returned to Carrington on Sunday and will travel with the squad to Dublin for the AC Milan friendly (3) (7). Two loans, first at Aston Villa then Barcelona, and now he is back in the building. Carrick confirmed it, and the photos of Rashford in training kit will land well with the fanbase.
The harder conversation comes next. Football Insider reported on Saturday that Rashford's future is unlikely to be resolved until late in the window (4). Fenerbahce hold interest, but few other top European clubs have publicly surfaced. Carrick must integrate a forward who has not played for United since 2024 into a group that has moved on. The rebuild Carrick wants is happening in pieces, not one clean sweep. The Mount scare in Gothenburg was a reminder that the midfield search cannot wait until deadline week.
What to watch
Hull City away, August 22, the Premier League opener (NEXT MATCH). Rashford will have trained with the group for nearly two weeks by then. Mount's knock will either be forgotten or it will be the first chapter of another season shaped by the treatment room. Carrick has been careful all summer.
