Rashford return certain, United walk away from Fernandes

Rashford return now '100% genuine'

A Marcus Rashford return to Manchester United next season is now virtually certain, according to Mail journalist Chris Wheeler. Speaking via The United Stand, Wheeler said the chances are "100% genuine" (1). Both club and player would prefer a different outcome, but the door is now wide open for him to pull on the shirt again.

Fernandes to Spurs, United walk away

Tottenham have beaten United to Mateus Fernandes. Spurs were willing to pay £85 million up front, and United's final offer, which nearly matched the figure, was loaded with add-ons and a lower initial fee (1) (2) (7). United sources insist they pushed hard but will not overpay, and the club was not convinced Fernandes really wanted the move (3) (4). A Bola went further, claiming he simply is not good enough for United (4).

Next midfield target identified

United have already moved on. A new midfield target has been lined up after the Fernandes miss (3). Meanwhile, Crysencio Summerville of West Ham is the top left-wing target for Michael Carrick's side this summer (5).

Bruno says no to Galatasaray

Galatasaray want Bruno Fernandes for their number 10 role this summer, but the 31-year-old has no interest in leaving (6). Fernandes wants to continue as United captain with Champions League football next season, and TRT Spor called his unwillingness to leave the biggest obstacle to any deal (6).

Mazraoui shines at left-back for Morocco

Noussair Mazraoui delivered a standout performance at left-back as Morocco beat Netherlands in the World Cup round of 32 on Tuesday (5). He won 100% of his tackles and may have given Michael Carrick something to think about. The display suggests United might not need to sign a new left-back this summer after all (5).

Amad scores, Côte d'Ivoire go out

Norway 2–1 Côte d'Ivoire. Amad Diallo came off the bench and scored a brilliant equalizer, almost forcing extra time, but Erling Haaland's side held on (8). Côte d'Ivoire are out of the World Cup, but Amad made his mark.

Fan reactions

Fans are split on the Fernandes saga. Some see Spurs paying £85 million up front as a deal United were right to walk away from, while others point to Simon Stone's reporting that the club pulled out because they were not convinced Fernandes wanted to join. The Crysencio Summerville link is also generating interest, with supporters already discussing how he fits into Carrick's attack. Read the full discussion.
