The captain who carried a club: Fernandes, Carrick, and the summer ahead

The captain who carried a club

Bruno Fernandes is the Premier League's Player of the Year. Not an Arsenal player. Not a title winner. A Manchester United captain who dragged an imperfect team to third place and Champions League football.

The award, decided this week, is recognition of a season that has been nothing short of remarkable (1). With one match still to play at Brighton, Fernandes sits on the brink of history. He needs two assists to break the single-season record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, a benchmark that has stood for over two decades (17). Given his form, you would not bet against him.

This is not a consolation prize. It is a statement. In a season defined by transition, by a caretaker turned permanent manager, by a squad still carrying deadwood from previous regimes, Fernandes has been the constant. The beating heart.

Carrick's project takes shape

Michael Carrick is no longer the interim solution. He is the permanent manager, and the club moved this week to secure not just his future but that of his entire backroom staff (5). Five contract renewals are imminent, including assistant Steven Holland (10). This is INEOS drawing a line: the Carrick era is real, and it is funded.

Carrick's pre-Brighton press conference told you everything about his mindset. "I've loved every minute of it," he said, dismissing any suggestion he needs a rest. Champions League qualification has not sated him. It has sharpened him.

The numbers back the optimism. Since Carrick took over, United have outperformed even Arsenal in several unexpected metrics. Third place, 68 points, a positive goal difference. It is not the title. But it is a foundation.

A midfield revolution begins

The transfer window is not officially open, yet United are already shaping the squad for next season. The priority is clear: midfield.

Atalanta's Ederson is the name dominating briefings. Fabrizio Romano reports the Brazilian has made United his "total priority" and that INEOS are in advanced talks (2) (4) (14). A deal is close. Alongside him, United are confident of landing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, a midfielder Carrick reportedly "loves" (4) (11) (18). The combined cost would push past £100 million.

Not everything is going to plan. Carrick's preferred midfield target, one the club deems "really expensive," has been put on hold (16). And there is the uncomfortable matter of departures. Barcelona will not trigger Marcus Rashford's £26 million buy option, sending him back to Old Trafford (9). Casemiro is being linked with Inter Miami, with one teammate already rolling out the welcome mat (8). Manuel Ugarte has been told he can leave.

INEOS are clearing the decks. Whether they can land the replacements is the question that will define the summer.

What to watch for

Brighton away is the final act. It should be a celebration, but it is also an audition. Carrick has confirmed academy graduates, including Shea Lacey, will get minutes. For those young players, 90 minutes at the Amex could shape their careers.

Beyond Sunday, the focus turns to the market. Ederson and Mateus Fernandes appear to be the first two pieces of a midfield rebuild that must be completed before pre-season. The Rashford situation also needs resolving. Barcelona's decision not to buy leaves United with a £26 million problem and a player who may not fit Carrick's system.

This summer will reveal whether INEOS are serious about backing their manager, or whether the Fernandes brilliance that carried United this far will be asked to do it all over again.
