Ugarte injury forces United into midfield scramble as Ederson deal nears

Ugarte's injury, one done deal, and seven midfielders in the air

Manuel Ugarte is out long-term. That single fact has turned a tidy summer plan into something far messier. United entered the window needing one midfielder. They now need two (10). The Ederson deal is wrapped up. Fabrizio Romano reports only the final formal step remains before the Atalanta man is official (1) (7). That is the first box ticked. The second is a moving target, and the list of names tells you everything about where this window is heading.

The Alex Scott puzzle

Alex Scott is clearly the player United want. Direct contact has been made with Bournemouth (15). Football Insider reports the 22-year-old may have a release clause in his new contract, which would change the maths entirely (10). Bournemouth's response, however, has been blunt: not for sale (15).

That rejection explains the chaos unfolding around it. Seven midfielders have been credibly linked in the past seven days alone. Personal terms are agreed with Brighton's Carlos Baleba, but INEOS are unwilling to meet the £75m valuation (16). Andrey Santos is a live option from Chelsea, valued at £50m (4) (9). Khephren Thuram is available from Juventus for a similar fee (12). Roma have offered Neil El Aynaoui (17). Johan Manzambi is being scouted at the World Cup (14). And Xavier Parker, a City academy prospect United showed interest in, is heading to Liverpool instead (5).

This is not a club executing a plan with conviction. This is a club working through a list after the plan fell apart.

Tchouaméni goes elsewhere

The Aurelien Tchouaméni saga captures the week perfectly. Nicky Butt went public with a ringing endorsement, calling the Real Madrid midfielder a "perfect fit" alongside Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo (18). United were reportedly "decidido" to pursue him, with Madrid demanding €90m (17). By midweek, multiple outlets had Xabi Alonso convincing Tchouaméni to join Chelsea instead (20).

Losing a marquee target to a rival while a club legend's endorsement still hangs in the air is the kind of sequence that makes fans wince. It also sharpens the pressure on getting the Scott or Baleba pursuit right.

Mazraoui and Martínez deliver

Two United defenders used the World Cup stage to remind everyone what is already in the building. Noussair Mazraoui made 14 defensive contributions as Morocco beat Canada 3–0 to reach the quarter-final on Saturday (7). Erik ten Hag spoke glowingly this week about Mazraoui's football intelligence, a quality he identified years ago at Ajax (23). Lisandro Martínez scored and assisted for Argentina against Cabo Verde, lighting up United social media (22).

In a week defined by midfield uncertainty, the back line is quietly reinforcing its credentials.

What comes next

The Ederson announcement will land any day now. That is the easy part. The second midfield signing is where the summer will be shaped. Bournemouth's resolve on Scott will be tested if that release clause is genuine. Baleba is ready to come, but INEOS need to find a number Brighton will accept. And if the Tchouaméni move to Chelsea firms up, the list shrinks again. One deal done, one injury forcing the rebuild, and a market that is not waiting.
