Cassim is confirmed from City
United have wrapped up the signing of 17-year-old midfielder Karim Cassim from Manchester City (6) (7). He is an England youth international and an FA Youth Cup winner with City. He joins the academy midfield.
That is the deal the club has actually announced. Everything else below is noise around it.
The same window also brings in Konde
United have completed a raid on Liverpool for 16-year-old winger Isaac Konde and are preparing the official announcement (3) (4) (8). Konde had been with Liverpool since he was nine. He is set to join Darren Fletcher's Under-18 side (3) (7).

Two academy signings from two rivals in one week. The strategy is not subtle.
Matanovic is the target up front
United have made an enquiry over a January move for Freiburg forward Igor Matanovic (1). The line from Ben Jacobs: "Matanovic is not going to be easy to get out of Freiburg mid-season" (1).
Your team signed Benjamin Sesko for the front line, and the goals have not followed. Five games in, United sit 12th on 5 points with a 0 goal difference. That is the context for a January striker enquiry.
Dorgu wants a fixed left-back role
Patrick Dorgu has told Michael Carrick he prefers a set position. His words: "I'd prefer to have one fixed position. It makes things easier to work on during training. But many players today can play multiple positions" (2).
Dorgu has been used mostly as a winger under Carrick, but he wants to be a left-back (2). At left-back United have Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui (2). Dorgu is now making the case for that spot himself.
The debt keeps climbing
United have borrowed another £90m since 30 June, taking overall debt past £1.1bn (5). That number lands in the same week as two academy signings and a January striker enquiry.
Every bit of spending from here is judged against that balance sheet.
Senior exit decisions are stacking up
United face a rework of how they handle player exits, with Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes all coming into focus over the next year (9).
The plan is built on selling or keeping senior players decisively to fund a premium centre-back (9). Carrick has to make those calls while the table looks like it does.
Elsewhere in the market
Barcelona sporting director Deco says the club is not interested in United teenager JJ Gabriel (10). United have made contact over 16-year-old Gambian midfielder Omar Marong, with several European clubs also keen, and Christopher Vivell wants a Belgian left-back lined up for 2027 (11) (12). A surprise club is reportedly working on a deal for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who has been linked with United (13).
Fan reactions
The mood in the United subreddit is split between the academy business and the money. The £90m loan and the £1.1bn debt figure are the posts doing the rounds, one laying out the £191.73m spent since 30 June against £120m borrowed in three chunks. Others are tracking the internationals: Patrick Dorgu's heatmap as a right winger for Denmark, a Bryan Mbeumo goal for Cameroon, and Bruno Fernandes starting for Portugal.
