Zirkzee stays, Rashford in play, and Kone is the name that matters

INEOS blocked Joshua Zirkzee's move to Juventus this week. The striker had made his intentions clear, he wanted out, but a strong pre-season showing against Rosenborg changed the calculation upstairs. The £36.5m forward will now stay, or at most depart on loan (7).

It is a U-turn that exposes the awkward truth about this squad: when a player who asked to leave becomes too important to sell, your depth is thinner than anyone at the club will say out loud.

Kone, Rashford, and the deal that would reshape the midfield

Manu Kone is the name on every briefing. Roma's midfielder is United's priority target after Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's ACL injury. The club have already rejected two alternatives because INEOS want, in Fabrizio Romano's phrasing, "the best in France" (3). That is Kone.

The lever is Marcus Rashford. A swap deal would knock Roma's £51m asking price down to roughly £26m (5). That valuation of a homegrown forward is brutal but honest. Rashford's loan at Barcelona did not reset his market, and Carrick is reportedly ready to sanction the exit. If Roma bite, the midfield rebuild has its anchor. If they do not, United go into August still chasing.

United are not betting everything on one name. A £68m move for Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni is alive, Andy Mitten reports the Frenchman would be open to Old Trafford if Madrid decided to move on (1). Carlos Baleba of Brighton has re-emerged as a target (10). The club also rejected Botafogo's Danilo outright, with Romano confirming United passed on the Brazilian World Cup midfielder (2) (8). That selectivity is new. INEOS are being choosy. Whether they are being effective is a question the next three weeks will answer.

The one thing that is actually working

Mason Mount and Andrey Santos in central midfield. Mount spoke about the partnership this week with more clarity than you usually get from a pre-season soundbite: "He's a little bit more defensive, so it allows me to push on a little bit more and work off him. Defensively as well, we're both players that want to get around it, put tackles in, win the ball back and be aggressive" (4).

Mount sees himself in this role long-term. Santos reads the game. The pairing has balance, one pushes, one sits, both press. In a summer where the midfield is being rebuilt in real time, this axis looks like something Carrick can actually build around.

Neco Williams and the full-back question

Mick Brown, a former United scout, said this week that the club could accelerate a move for Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams: "He's somebody they really admire, Michael Carrick is a big fan… he can play on both sides of the defence. Those are a few boxes ticked" (9). Champions League football would be hard for Williams to turn down. Forest do not want to sell and are tough negotiators. The window is open.

What to watch

The Kone-Rashford swap is the story that makes or breaks this window. If it moves, Zirkzee's reprieve makes sense, Mount's role solidifies, and the midfield has its cornerstone. If it stalls, United enter August with a striker who wanted to leave, a midfield missing Ugarte for the season, and a market that knows exactly how desperate they are. Pre-season form is a footnote. This deal is the season.
