Zota Silva decided the week in 47 minutes
Olympiacos 5–0 Kalamata, and the scoreline flatters nobody. Zota Silva scored a hat-trick, the third of them on 47 minutes, and the game was over inside the first half (1)(7). Two of those goals came three minutes apart, on 37 and 40, a header and a strike from outside the box before the interval (10) (9) (5). The Portuguese had never scored twice in a top-flight match before this one (8). Five straight wins across all competitions, third in the Super League on 16 points from seven games.
Five wins, but look at what they were
Run the list and it reads better than it plays. Olympiacos 1–0 Panathinaikos. Marseille 0–1 Olympiacos. Panetolikos 0–2 Olympiacos. Olympiacos 1–0 Sparta Prague. Then Kalamata. Four of those five were settled by a single goal, three of them by clean sheets and a single strike. That is control, not dominance, and it only became dominance once the fixture list softened. Kalamata at home is the first genuinely comfortable afternoon in a month, and that gap tells you where this squad actually stands. The derby, the Marseille trip and Sparta Prague were all won on nerve and defending, not on the attack. Fine margins repeated five times is a habit worth having. It is not a foundation.
Nikolakopoulos called the mentality question
Before kickoff, Kostas Nikolakopoulos framed the Kalamata match as a character test, warning that Olympiacos would have real problems if they gave Kalamata encouragement (15). He also said a job well done would pay off big the following Sunday (15). He was half right. There was no encouragement, no wobble. The bigger point is the one he did not push hard: a squad with this many one-goal wins cannot afford a flat afternoon against a lesser side, so the professional 5–0 matters more than it looks. Olympiacos did what top teams are supposed to do, which is exactly why it has been worth noting when they did not.
Also worth noting: the K19 side beat Kalamata 4–0 at Renti in Super League K19 (14). A different competition and a different team. It is not evidence about the first team.
Watch the cushion hold
Kifisia away on Saturday 31 October, 18:00, is the next league fixture. Then Rennes away in the Europa League on 5 November. Four of the last five wins were ground out at one goal. Kifisia away is exactly the kind of night that punishes a team that only wins by fine margins. If Zota Silva carries this form into it, the cushion gets real. If he does not, this week's margin goes back to being a single goal.
