The midfield hunt defines the week
No football this weekend before the Sunday opener, but Panathinaikos have never been quiet in August. The defining story of the week is the same one that has run through the whole window: the search for a holding midfielder. Besiktas' Moatazem Al-Musrati is now the name at the top of the list (1). The Libyan is exactly the profile this squad has lacked for two seasons, a genuine destroyer in front of the back four.
The Al-Musrati links are not new smoke. Panathinaikos have made the number six their stated priority this window (1). That focus is correct. Last season's midfield too often got run through in transition, and the fix is a player who wins duels, not another box-to-box runner. If the club actually lands Al-Musrati, the whole structure changes. If they chase him for three weeks and settle for a loan on deadline day, this is a repeat of the same frustrating pattern.
Pantelidis, out for months
The worst news of the week is not a rumour. Winger Pavlos Pantelidis fractured his tibia and fibula and will miss four to six months (2). That is the kind of injury that ends a season before it starts, and it lands on a player who looked ready for a breakout year.

Panathinaikos now have one fewer attacking option on the flanks right at the moment the fixture list gets heavy. The depth behind the starters was already thin, and losing Pantelidis for the bulk of the campaign forces the question of whether the club must act in the market for a wide player too, not just a midfielder. The injury is not a story to wave away. Six months is a career interruption, and for a young winger on the rise it could not have come at a worse time.
The radar is wide
Two more names surfaced this week, and they tell you the scouting department is working a specific type. A Braga player described as an indisputable starter is of interest to both Panathinaikos and Cruzeiro (5). GAIS' Anes Cardaklija is also on the list, with Spezia in the race (7).
Cardaklija is the more interesting link. The centre-back has been one of the best defenders in the Swedish top flight this season, and he told GP earlier this summer it would take something genuinely excellent to move (7). Panathinaikos need cover at the back as much as they need a six, and Cardaklija's profile, an aggressive, ball-playing defender, fits what the coach wants to build. The competition is real. Spezia are serious about him, and GAIS will not sell cheap.
What to watch
The season starts Sunday against Kifisia, then Levadiakos away a week later, before PAOK at home on September 5. Three games in the first fourteen days, and the squad that walks out against Kifisia may not be the one that finishes the window. Watch the Al-Musrati talks closely. If a deal gets done before the PAOK match, the number six problem is solved. If it drags, the season opens with the same structural weakness that cost points last year.
