Two names, one message
Victor Kristiansen. Stefan de Vrij. The club is not window-shopping. A 23-year-old full-back with Premier League miles and a 33-year-old with Champions League pedigree. This is not a scattergun summer. This is a back line being assembled with purpose.
The league table says fourth, 52 points from 32 games, a +14 goal difference. Respectable. Not convincing. The defence has conceded too many goals in key moments this season, and a reset was overdue. Obradović has clearly identified the spine as the priority, and the club is backing him with real money and real targets.

Sportime reports that Panathinaikos have taken the lead in negotiations for Kristiansen, with contacts between the two clubs now in the final straight (1). Leicester are prepared to sell. The Dane would fill a position that has been patched rather than solved for two seasons.

Kristiansen is not a speculative prospect. He has started regularly in the Premier League, he can deliver a cross, and at 23 he arrives with room to grow rather than decline. The fee has not leaked yet, but Leicester paid a significant sum for him and will not let him go cheaply. The fact Panathinaikos are still at the table tells you the budget is real.
De Vrij: the old head the dressing room needs
If the Kristiansen deal signals youth and energy, De Vrij represents something else entirely. More than 300 Serie A appearances. A league title with Inter. A World Cup final with the Netherlands. He reads the game before the striker does, and that kind of anticipation does not show up on a stat sheet but it wins matches.
The line from his former Feyenoord teammates is almost too good: "He was a clumsy kid, nobody expected this" (3). Everyone expects it now. De Vrij has been one of the most reliable centre-backs in Europe for a decade. He will not be chasing wingers to the corner flag. He will be organising the line, winning headers, and making the players around him look better. That is the point.
Two defensive signings, both advanced, in the same week. You do not do that unless you have diagnosed the problem and decided to fix it properly.
What to watch
The deals are not done. Kristiansen and De Vrij both need final signatures, medicals, the formalities that can still unravel. But the direction is set. A week ago these were names on a shortlist. Now they are negotiations in endgame. The summer window is not about to open with gentle inquiries. It is opening with intent, and the defence will look different when it closes.
