Panathinaikos: A week of collapse, fight-back, and unfinished business

The Euroleague series that keeps on giving

Let's start with the obvious. Panathinaikos had Valencia on the ropes. Two games up, playing well enough to feel like Final Four was theirs to take. Then Games 3 and 4 happened, and now it's 2–2 with a sold-out Roig Arena waiting on Wednesday (1) (11) (13).

Analyst Antonis Kalkavouris put it plainly this week: what turned the series wasn't Valencia suddenly finding another level. It was Panathinaikos losing their hardness and their tactical discipline (1). That's the honest diagnosis. When you lead a Euroleague playoff series 2–0, you don't get beaten back to level by superior opponents. You get beaten by your own mistakes. The drop in intensity, the loosening of structures, the failure to close games. That's on the coaching staff and on the players equally.

The Giannakopoulou complaint about refereeing is noted. Dimitris Giannakopoulos sent footage to Euroleague after Game 4, citing decisions he felt went against the club (27). Fair enough, clubs have the right to flag these things. But let's be clear: referees didn't build a 2–0 lead and then let it slip. That was internal.

The football front: Benitez in trouble

Meanwhile on the Super League front, the football side of the club walked into the Athens derby against AEK at Allwyn Arena carrying significant absences, with Bakasetas unavailable and Rafa Benitez forced into plan changes he hadn't budgeted for (16) (17) (18). The traditional record away at Nea Filadelfia offers little comfort either — this is not a ground Panathinaikos have historically enjoyed visiting (19).

With AEK capable of wrapping up the title mathematically this weekend (10) (22), the context for the derby couldn't be more loaded. Benitez has been playing the same patterns regardless of opponent (2), and the lack of adaptability is becoming a theme rather than an exception. Losing Bakasetas is not just an injury problem. It exposes how thin the creative options are when the first choice isn't available (18).

One piece of genuine good news

Not everything was turbulent. The volleyball section delivered, winning back-to-back national championships (15). It's a reminder that the green banner flies across more than one sport. Small consolation for football and basketball fans grinding through tense playoffs, but worth acknowledging.

What to watch next week

Wednesday night at Roig Arena is the only thing that matters in the short term. A sold-out arena, a hostile crowd, and a Valencia side that refused to die (11) (12) (13). Kalkavouras believes Panathinaikos can still win this (1), and so do plenty of supporters. But the team that showed up in Games 3 and 4 will not be enough. The question is whether Ergotelis Athinaidon — the old PAO hardness — comes back for Game 5, or whether the series slips away entirely. On the football side, watch how Benitez reshuffles without Bakasetas. If the same rigid patterns continue against a rested AEK, the gap at the top of the table will start to look permanent rather than temporary.
