Diego Costa signs and PAOK head to Athens with depth

Costa lands and the defence gets serious

Diego Costa is a PAOK player. The Brazilian centre-back joined from Krasnodar, born July 21, 1999, in Campo Grande, and he slots straight into a back line that PAOK have now reinforced twice in the space of a week (4). Hours earlier the club announced Iranian centre-back Mahdi Jelve (1). Two central defenders in a single window stretch is not rotation depth, it is a statement about where the weak point was.

And the timing is not subtle. PAOK play Panathinaikos at OAKA in matchday 3. The derby is live this Sunday evening (5). A side that conceded twice at Atromitos... wait, no. They won 2–1 at Atromitos, but they conceded. The clean sheet against Levadiakos in a 4–0 win was the exception, not the rule, in a defence that shipped two against Atromitos, two against Panathinaikos in May, and one each to Olympiacos and AEK in the run-in (fixtures). The manager has not been subtle about it either. The response is Costa and Jelve. You do not buy two centre-backs to sit on the bench.

Six points from two, third place, and the derby

The table is comfortable. PAOK sit third with 6 points from two matches and a +5 goal difference after the 4–0 over Levadiakos and the 2–1 win at Atromitos in August (fixtures). That is the league form. But the last three meetings in the spring were all draws, 1–1 at Olympiacos, 1–1 with AEK, 2–2 at Panathinaikos (fixtures). PAOK could not kill those games. Now they arrive at OAKA level on points with a title challenger and, on paper, a deeper squad than the one that could only draw there in May.

The question mark is the one the supporters are already asking. A fan thread asks if the team even has the players to go to Panathinaikos, and other supporters are pushing back (Reddit). The fixture list agrees the depth is thin: it is the derby this Sunday, then Aris at home on September 13, then Panetolikos away on September 19 (fixtures). Three matches in nine days. This is exactly the stretch where two new centre-backs earn their wages or the summer business looks like cover rather than a fix.

What to watch

The retest is the story. PAOK drew 2–2 at Panathinaikos in May and finally have the defensive pieces they were missing that night. Costa and Jelve cannot both have played their way into rhythm in a matter of days, so watch which one starts in Athens and how the back line holds without the player PAOK did not have this time last season. Six points, third place, unbeaten in August, and now a derby that tells us whether those two signings were the missing spine or just two more bodies.
