PAOK take a 3–2 lead to Toumba but lose Taha Ali on debut

Three goals, one lead, and a debut that lasted 14 minutes

PAOK walked out of Kyiv with a 3–2 win and every reason to feel good about themselves. Brazko, Mythou, and Zivkovic scored the goals (1) (11). The first leg of the Europa League second qualifying round is done, and a one-goal lead goes back to Toumba for a Thursday decider. That is the headline.

It is not the whole story. The story is that a new signing lasted a quarter of an hour before his shoulder gave out. The story is that a key midfielder wants out and half of Europe is circling. The story is a squad already patching itself together before the competitive season has properly begun.

Taha Ali, 14 minutes, done

You sign a winger from Sweden, you hand him a debut in a European qualifier, and 14 minutes in he is on the floor holding his shoulder. That is PAOK's week in one image. Taha Ali dislocated the joint and will miss roughly a month (4). Lisci's quote tells you nothing and everything: the club is waiting for tests (4) (8). What they already know is that Ali misses the return leg and will not feature in the next round either if PAOK get there.

A debut like that stays with a player. It also leaves a hole. PAOK's wide options were already thin, and Ali was meant to be part of the solution. He will be, eventually. Not this week. Not this month.

Camara says no, the vultures circle

Mady Camara has rejected a new contract. PAOK have put him on the market, and the list of interested clubs reads like a Europa League group stage draw: Getafe, Rayo Vallecano, Freiburg, Mainz (7). He already turned down Cruzeiro, which says something about the level of interest. Camara is in excellent form, versatile, and has the European experience clubs covet. He is also a player PAOK cannot easily replace.

The timing stings. A European campaign is starting, the squad is already nursing injuries to Meite and Despodov, Shoretire is only training partially (8), and the one midfielder who could anchor everything wants out. This is not a crisis, not yet. It is a warning. Lose Camara without a replacement ready and the midfield balance shifts fast.

One leg in Toumba

Dynamo Kyiv have their own problems. Vivcharenko is out long-term after knee surgery. Kabayev is injured too and admitted he will not be at full rhythm until after the second leg (6). PAOK have a lead, a home crowd, and an opponent weakened by absences.

That should be enough. Should. The 3–2 lead is narrow, the kind of scoreline that can vanish in 20 minutes if concentration slips. Polish referee Sylwestrak has been appointed for the tie (9). Toumba needs to be a fortress, not a theatre. Thursday is the entire season compressed into one night.

PAOK Women did their job quietly, dismantling Neftchi Baku 3–0 to advance in the Women's Champions League (3) (5). Professional, clean, no drama. A reminder that this club can do things the easy way when it wants to.

The men's team rarely does things the easy way. Thursday at Toumba. Hold the lead, or the summer tilts.
