Two gut punches, one week
Two European ties, two defeats, zero room left for error. Brann knocked PAOK out of Champions League qualifying with a 3–2 win (5), and Anderlecht left Toumba with a 0–1 first-leg victory in the Europa League third qualifying round (3). This is not a slow start. This is a new project taking fire before the league campaign has even begun.
The Brann loss stings but it is not fatal. PAOK drop into the Europa Cup round of 32, so European football continues whatever happens in Brussels (5). The Anderlecht defeat is the one that truly matters now. A disallowed Mythos goal dominated the post-match conversation, with the Referee Channel explaining why it was struck off (6). The squad is taking shape, fast
Dimitrios Giannoulis is back. The Greek international left-back has spoken about his return in a club interview, and it is a statement signing, the kind that tells the league PAOK are not messing around this summer (8). Reiquan Gray arrived in Thessaloniki with similar intent. "I came because I wanted to be part of the project. It is easier to play here as an opponent," he said (4). That is not PR fluff. The work is not finished. PAOK are in talks with Feyenoord striker Casper Tengstedt, competing with Trabzonspor, Seattle Sounders, and Championship clubs for the Dane (1). The attack needs sharpening, and fast. Two goals across two European ties is not the output of a side ready to compete on multiple fronts.
Dortmund are watching
Just as PAOK try to build something, the vultures circle. Borussia Dortmund have reportedly turned their attention to Giannis Konstantelias after wrapping up the Karetsas deal (7). The timing is brutal. Lose your most creative talent while the new signings are still finding their feet and the whole rebuild risks looking like running to stand still. The club have to hold the line here.
What to watch
Thursday 13 August, away to Anderlecht. Win by two clear goals or the Europa League dream dies in qualifying. Everything else, the transfers, the quotes, the disallowed goal debates, fades into irrelevance. This new PAOK needs its first real result, and Brussels is where it has to happen.
