Carvajal's tears, Mbappé's crown, and the summer that will define Madrid

The end of an era, the start of something else

Real Madrid closed their La Liga season with a 4-2 win over Athletic Club at the Bernabéu. But nobody will remember the scoreline. They will remember Dani Carvajal walking off the pitch for the last time, tears streaming, an entire stadium on its feet. They will remember David Alaba raising that chair one final time. This was not a match. This was a funeral for a generation.

Carvajal leaves after 23 years at the club, 13 as a first-team player, six European Cups, and a body that gave everything until it could give no more. "Real is my life," he said, and no one watching needed the translation (2) (8). Alaba, five years and a mountain of trophies later, called it "a marvellous era" and he was right (2) (3). With them, the last threads connecting this squad to the three-peat dynasty have snapped. Every player from that legendary 2016-18 Champions League run has now departed. That fact alone should make every Madridista pause.

Mbappé's quiet coronation

Lost in the emotional avalanche was Kylian Mbappé securing the Pichichi trophy with 25 league goals in his debut season (10) (11). The Frenchman scored again against Athletic and will almost certainly finish as the Champions League's top scorer too. Double golden boot in year one. At any other club, this would be the dominant narrative. At Madrid, it barely cracked the front page. That tells you something about the standards here and the weight of the farewells.

The Vini problem will not go away

Vinícius Júnior was granted leave and did not attend the Bernabéu for his teammates' goodbyes. Spanish media did not hold back. Marca framed it as a player "preoccupied only with himself" while the rest of the club mourned (4) (30). This is not a minor gossip item. When your star winger, already linked with a blockbuster summer move, skips the captain's farewell, it signals something broken. Whether that fracture can heal or whether this summer becomes the natural exit point is now the most consequential question facing the club.

Arbeloa exits without a word and Mourinho watches

Álvaro Arbeloa cancelled his final press conference (8). After a season of near-misses, his tenure ended not with a bang but with silence. Meanwhile, José Mourinho was spotted at the DFB-Pokal final scouting Bayern Munich's Michael Olise, widely reported as a prime summer target (11) (22). The machinery is already turning toward next season.

Youth delivers when the seniors falter

There was one piece of unambiguously good news. Real Madrid Juvenil A thrashed Barcelona 3-1 to win the Copa de Campeones Juvenil, completing a historic treble of league, Youth League, and domestic cup (15) (20). Castilla also scraped into the promotion playoffs (13). The pipeline is alive.

What comes next

The summer will define everything. A new head coach is arriving, a presidential election is brewing with Enrique Riquelme formalising his candidacy (5), and the squad faces its most significant identity shift since Cristiano Ronaldo left. Camavinga wants to stay, which helps (6). Valverde will wear the armband as the club's first Uruguayan captain (7) (26). But the Vini question, the Carvajal-sized hole at right-back, and the broader rebuild under what appears to be a Mourinho restoration will dominate every headline until August. Buckle up.
