The Málaga test is where the real shape of this team shows
Two games, six points, seven goals scored, one conceded. The league table after matchday two reads exactly as a Real Madrid season is supposed to: perfect start, second in the table on goal difference, one win behind the early leaders (1)(2). Espanyol fell 2–1 away, Real Sociedad were dismantled 4–1 at home. So far, so routine.
But Sunday's visit of promoted Málaga is where the disguise comes off. This is a promoted side at the Bernabéu, the exact fixture where the title challenger shows whether it has depth or just a very good XI. Mourinho has already answered that question with his team sheet. Five changes, and the headline is Marc Cucurella's first start for the club (12)(13). Two days from the deadline and the stories are arriving in a flood. The one name worth watching for the defence is Evan Ndicka, a player Mourinho knows from his Roma days and has reportedly recommended as the final centre-back signing of the window (14). That is not luxury shopping. It is a manager telling the board what he still needs to trust this squad over 38 games.
The kid pipeline keeps paying out, quietly
Before a ball was kicked, the club paid tribute to its U19 European champions, six academy names including Javi Navarro, Fortea and Mario Rivas (19). It is easy to ignore that ceremony as a nice gesture. It is not. This is the second week in a row the club has put academy products in front of the Bernabéu crowd. The pipeline that produced the current spine is still running, and Mourinho has never been shy about using young players when they earn it.
What to watch this week
Málaga first, then the fixture calendar gets serious. On Friday Real Madrid travel to Real Betis, and three days later Internazionale come to the Bernabéu for the Champions League opener on Tuesday September 8. That is three games in nine days with rotation already happening, a squad question being asked at the sharp end of the window. The Ndicka signing, or whatever replaces it, will tell you how confident this board is that the current back line can hold through that run.
