José Mourinho is back at Real Madrid and the first thing you notice is that nobody looks comfortable. That is the point.
The 2–1 win over Ferencvaros on Saturday was the third straight victory of pre-season (2). Mario Rivas scored. Carlos Espí scored, then called it "magical" to wear the jersey (20). Bernardo Silva made his debut off the bench after nine years at Manchester City, speaking flawless Spanish in his first interview as a madridista (14). The optics were clean. The undercurrent was anything but.
Valverde did not expect this version of Mourinho
Federico Valverde, the captain, said it plainly: "I didn't expect Mourinho to be like this" (2) (4) (21). This was not a complaint. It was a player with four Champions League medals admitting his new coach surprised him. That is the Mourinho effect. He returns to a club that drifted last season, finishing 16th in a league it should dominate, and immediately resets the emotional temperature. Valverde's words matter because they signal the dressing room is alert, not resistant. When the captain is still learning what the manager demands, nobody is safe.

Silva gets the Mourinho treatment on day one
Bernardo Silva's first 45 minutes in a Madrid shirt came with a public scolding. Mourinho told reporters the Portuguese international arrived "in much worse physical shape" after his summer break and needs to improve (8) (16). Nine years at City, four Premier League titles, and Mourinho still put him on notice before the first league ball is kicked. Silva handled it well, at least publicly, deflecting attention by praising Arda Güler: "His quality is already clear" (9). The talent is not the issue. The question is how quickly Silva gets up to speed with a coach who does not wait for anyone.
The Güler question is now urgent
PSG have lodged a bid for Arda Güler, reportedly around €115 million (22) (24). Spanish media described Madrid's performance in Budapest as having two tempos: one with Güler on the ball and one without it (Reddit 5). That is not an exaggeration. He dictates rhythm in a way nobody else in this squad does. Madrid cannot afford to sell him, not with the season starting at Espanyol on 22 August and the attack still finding its shape. Endrick is also attracting interest from Liverpool (6) (11). The club needs to decide who stays and who goes, and Güler must be the former.
Bouaddi, Camavinga, and the squad puzzle
Ayyoub Bouaddi is back on the market after Manchester City shifted focus to Alexis Mac Allister (11) (12) (19). That opens a path Madrid should take. Meanwhile, Mourinho knows Asencio and Eduardo Camavinga will not leave despite the "operación salida" (18). Camavinga staying is good news, a midfielder who can do everything Mourinho asks. The squad is taking shape but the edges are still rough. Two more friendlies remain: Deportivo A Coruna on Wednesday and Schalke 04 on 16 August (16). That is eight days to get Silva fit, settle the Güler situation, and decide who starts at Espanyol. The pre-season has been promising. Now it gets real.
