Olise and Alvarez pursuits hit dead ends as Madrid's real business takes shape

The Olise door slams shut, twice

Lothar Matthäus does not speak for Bayern Munich's boardroom, but he knows how that building thinks. His verdict on the Michael Olise rumors this week: Bayern will not even consider negotiations, and the headlines linking him to Real Madrid "will only make them laugh" (1). Two days later, the player's agent delivered the same message from the other side. "Don't worry, we're staying" (6). One source is a club legend. The other is the man who negotiates Olise's contracts. When both say the same thing in the same week, the saga is over.

Madrid had reportedly already accepted this. The hope was gone before the quotes landed (6). Bayern hold every lever: a long contract, no release clause, and a player who is not pushing. There is no angle left to work.

The Álvarez pursuit landed in the same grave. A €150m bid was rejected. Joan Laporta is now circling with Barcelona, and his public remark, "A big club cannot afford to have players who are unhappy," is a dagger aimed at Atlético's negotiating position (7). It also kills any residual Madrid hope. Atleti are not selling their best forward to a direct rival after rejecting nine figures, and Barça's entry only inflates the price further.

Both sagas, Olise and Álvarez, were improbable from the start (10). This week confirmed they were impossible.

The quieter business is already done

Lost in the noise is a simple fact: Real Madrid's early summer work is practically complete (2). Ibrahima Konaté is arriving. Marc Cucurella's move is far enough along that Chelsea are already hunting a left-back replacement (8). And Fran García, once a Madrid prospect, delivered a sharp preseason debut for Betis that reminds everyone the pipeline still flows (12).

The Rodri links were never serious and the club has cooled whatever faint interest existed (4) (11). Mac Allister being "offered" to Madrid feels like agent footwork, not squad planning (9). The Bastoni noise, that he would already be a Madrid player if the decision were his alone, is tantalizing but changes nothing without Inter's consent (3).

The real story is a squad taking shape while the market's loudest names go elsewhere. Vinícius remains the one non-negotiable piece: the club wants him extended, and there is reportedly an immovable condition attached to making that happen (5). That negotiation matters more than any failed pursuit.

What to watch

Preseason fixtures will arrive before the month ends, and Cucurella's integration into the back line is the first test. Fans on the subreddit are already restless about the centre-back depth. Militão's injury record and Huijsen's inconsistency mean Konaté alone may not be enough. A second defensive addition before the window closes is the question that will not go quiet.
