Flores out of World Cup with torn cruciate ligament

Marcelo Flores has been ruled out of the 2026 World Cup after suffering a torn cruciate ligament, delivering a cruel blow to both the Tigres midfielder and the Canadian national team. Canada have already moved to replace him, calling up Austin FC attacker Jayden Nelson to fill the void (1). For Tigres, the injury marks yet another setback in a difficult stretch that has seen the club lose a CONCACAF Champions Cup final on penalties, bid farewell to André-Pierre Gignac, and face criticism over training facilities during the World Cup buildup. Flores will now begin a lengthy recovery, missing what would have been the biggest stage of his career.
