Papagiannopoulos goes down, and the injury crisis deepens
Sotirios Papagiannopoulos was substituted in the 33rd minute against Örgryte IS on Sunday. Muscular, again (1). AIK already travelled to this match with ten players unavailable, eight of them injured: Axel Kouame, Taha Ayari, Ibrahim Cissé, Eskil Edh, Yannick Geiger, Charlie Pavey, Andreas Redkin, and Stanley Wilson all out, Diogo Tomas ineligible (8). Now add Papagiannopoulos to that list.
This is not a rough patch. This is a squad held together by tape, and the tape is snapping.
José Riveiro called it before the match. "Periodisation in football is not coffee with milk for everyone every day," he said, a line that reads better in any language than the injury bulletin it describes (9). He has been managing workloads like a triage nurse, not a head coach. The Häcken draw last week, 0–0 away, was a point earned through defensive structure. Two clean sheets in a row is the one bright thread in this (4). But structure depends on the players who hold it, and Papagiannopoulos is the one you cannot lose.

Carlstrand arrives, Tomas next, and the urgency is real
Linus Carlstrand was presented by AIK this week. A five-year deal through 2030, around 15 million kronor from Öster, their second biggest sale ever, and the most expensive from Superettan this season (11) (14). He trained at Karlberg and went straight into the match squad for Örgryte (8) (10). Ten goals and two assists in 15 Superettan matches tell you the profile: a finisher, not a project (3).
The club is not stopping there. Diogo Tomas, a 26-year-old centre-back last with ADO Den Haag, is reportedly close to joining (15). With Papagiannopoulos now injured and the absentee list hitting double digits, a centre-back signing shifts from sensible to non-negotiable. The Benkovic option has cooled; Tomas is the priority (15).
This is a club moving fast in a transfer window that has become an emergency response.
What to watch
Three points from Örgryte was the bare minimum, and the Papagiannopoulos injury changes the arithmetic of the week regardless of the scoreline. The next league fixture is the immediate concern, and Riveiro will have to assemble a back line without his most trusted defender. Watch for Tomas to be announced within days. Watch for Carlstrand to start. And watch the injury list, because if it grows any longer, even Riveiro's periodisation cannot save this.
